I'm curious about a behaviour my rat Nemo does, he likes to tug on the other rat's ears. Not hard or biting as there are no marks and he immediately lets go when when the other rat 'eeps'. He seems to just put his mouth on them. Only thing I've found on the internet is about aggressive behaviour and biting, but I haven't found any marks/scabs/blood being drawn from this.

I think most of us go by the rule: no harm, no foul. Rats love to pester each other. You wouldn't believe the squeaking coming from my cage some days. As long as everyone is OK, no worries!

Always wanted this looked at. This is Tyrion all wet...his hair pulled up so you can see the odd length of his hair...He's not curly...maybe a tad wavvy but its a bit long, longer then any other rat I have...is there a name for this or is it just normal?

So you can see this is his hair dry and normal

I have a few rats that way as well. Some just seem to have longer fur than others do. I dont know if there is a name for it though.

I never would of noticed that - now I have to go look at my boys and see who has short/long fur.... That leaves the nakies out!!!

Speaking of nakies, Tucker seems to be getting hormonal and I hate to have that giant set removed, but he seems to be going after Wally's gonads. He'll go after Wally and once Wally is in the boxing stance Tucker dives under for the nads. Is this something I should worry about or just keep an eye on since no damage is being done?:fishbeat:

How do I make rats stop trying to pull my nails off .___. I just got new fosters and they seem to think my nails are treats attached to my hand. It doesn't hurt really (other than my nail polish) but it's pretty uncomfortable that and I don't want them to actually rip one off. I've tried 'eeping' when they do this but they don't really stop and continue to do so.

Your ratty is much more gentle though, these rats literally latch onto my nails but I do have longer nails. Maybe they'll learn to be more gentle one day xD it wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't trying to kick my nail biting habit.

Try a time out cage - everytime he does it put him in a cage for 10 minutes. Only 10 minutes and make sure there is nothing in the cage for entertainment - use a travel cage. Don't know if it will work or not for this behavior, but you can try.

I try eeping gently and if they don't get the message I will eep loudly and vibrate my finger at the same time so they know to associate the sound with the chewing. Sometimes I have to do that two or three times, but they usually do get the message.
I find too that they are especially drawn to your hands if you have nail polish on or a bandaid or something like that. Must smell interesting.

Yeah, I might just have to wash my nail polish off at this rate. They've put so many dents into it in the past two days. The eeping works with one of them but the other one doesn't seem to get it too much. I've never had much issue with my rats but these boys are trouble makers, adorable trouble makers.

So I have a rat room. The area that isn't rat approved (has their food and some plastic bins and extra hammocks and the fan and air purifier with cords) is blocked off with cardboard boxes. I taped them together with duck tape and taped the edges to the wall with duck tape.

I'd like to leave the cage open in the rat room more often (like while I'm cooking dinner and whatnot). So I'm thinking about taping a section of cardboard over the door (the pieces are probably about 2 feet tall). Fred seems to think they'd be able to squeeze under the piece of cardboard though. Is that... possible? Or would I have to like somehow tape the cardboard to the floor?

I block my door with a baby gate the I inserted chloroplast into - I can post a picture later when I get home from work if you would like.

I would recommend buying a sheet of plexiglass. They come in different thicknesses. When I had ferrets I used to keep them in the kitchen. I attached two strips of 1/4 round trim on each side of the doorway to make slots to slide the plexiglass into. That way I could see them and they could see through, which stopped them from trying to jump over it as they couldn't really tell that it ended. And it's rigid so they can't get under it. I could just step over it to go into the kitchen. Worked great!

Ya, I'd love to see a picture!
I was actually supposed to get a baby gate from my dad (he has like 3 from when his puppy was younger) but he's a very forgetful person. So maybe I won't move forward with any door blocking until I get the gate.
I'd love how to see how you did it. C:

Hm, okay. Plexiglass seems really expensive here though, like 150$ for a piece? How big is your piece? And what is the trim like? I understand the concept but I don't get how it attaches to the door?

Sounds like I will skip on cardboard for the door.
Should I rethink my cardboard block inside of the room? The only thing I /really/ worry about are the two cords for the fan/air purifier.

Think of attaching two strips of wood, about 2 1/2 feet long, vertically on one side of the door jam, leaving a gap to form a channel. Then put two more strips of wood on the other side of the door frame to form a matching channel. You take the plexiglass and lift it above the channels and slide it down into the channels. We painted the wood white to match the trim so it was barely noticeable when the plexiglass was out.
Sometimes the hardware store will sell smaller pieces of plexiglass. If you measure your door frame width and then pick a height (2 1/2 feet?) they may sell you a half or quarter sheet, what ever you need. Also, the thickness makes a big difference in the price.
I'd take a pic, but haven't lived there in over ten years!

I have a baby gate set up at my rat room but when my rats come out t play, I place a coroplast and not once have the rats been able to move it. But If you have jumpers, you'll need to make it wider.

This is how it looks when its up - holes on the outside. I attached the chloroplast with zip ties.

This is the side that faces into the room.

We have no cords in the room and the outlets are covered with the baby outlet plugs.
