How long would it normally take for it to get a head?

Each abscess is different. Some are fast while others can actually take months. But you can speed it up by doing warm compresses.

Thank you, I'll try that. I really hope that's all it is.

Are "Snak Shak"'s safe for rats? I see a lot of people on here use them, but the first ingredient (and remember ingredients are always listed by quantity of that item in the product) is pine wood shavings! Isn't that really dangerous for rats to ingest? Is there a safe chew-toy alternative for them that won't splinter in their mouths/hurt them?

I don't know, but this is my opinion and its only an opinion. I bought my boys the logs which almost instantly become nasty cause they go inside them and they pee, etc so they didn't last too long before I through them away. I resently bought some that do not have bottoms (different company), but have not put them in the cages yet. I am also a bit concerned and have nothing to back this up, but one of my boys got sick not long after I put the logs in the cage and not long after passed from kidney disease. Was it related - I don't know, but I have wondered. I have been battling respiratory problems ever since, but I did bring a rat into our house w/URI that I suspect it the cause of the URI's.

I have never had a problem with them, but my rats don't chew them too much. I do like to have something in the cage that they can chew. It is less likely to splinter than chewing a wooden house because the wood in the Shak looks like pressed sawdust. Pine is a problem for rats because of the oil in the wood aggravating respiratory problems. I don't know if it's really going to affect them. Good question...

Mine have had them a lot in the past. Never had a problem with them and they loved them. The pine has to be baked so i am sure the oils are gone and the other ingredient is some form of hay...... Which wont harm them to have.

For those of you who make your own furniture...what would you use for framing if you wanted something to hold Is shape instead of being hung?

How do you tell the difference between rats who have the exact same colours? Ie PEWs? I know there are personality differences, but before those start to shine - how do you tell at a glance?

What's a good way to keep rattie's claws trimmed? I've tried doing it myself by filing or clipping, but they only put up with me to get one nail done before it's off to exploring again. >.< I was thinking sandpaper near their water bottle? Does this work?

Do not try and cut your rats nails with nail clippers, you are likely to take one of their fingers off. A rock or brick where they run a lot is best. if you are still having issues with long nails, wearing long sleeved clothing while handling helps avoid scratches.:rathugz:

I don't really mind that they rip my arms to shreds, more concerned if they end up accidentally hurting each other because of their nails. I got a terracotta saucer under their water bottle atm, couldn't find anyone to buy a brick right now. S:

Apparently lava ledges can help. I about four, and they seem to do nothing for my boys nails. I have cut their nails, but it didn't do much. I think bricks and rocks are the best bet. I gave up on those because my boy saw them as the ideal place to pee and they got really gross.

I have a question. I am kind of new to rats. I had 2 males 4 years ago and never had a problem.

I just recently acquired a siamese male adult rat. I have him on critter care natural. He was on aspen with no pine before I got him. He has been sneezing and when I got home from work last night he had dried blood around his nose in a circle. He cleaned it off and I had him out and playing and its like he has a nose bleed, but he is keeping his fur clean now so I don't see any blood but I see it on my furniture and clothes when I have him out. Should I Chang to fleece? Also do I need to sew fleece edges after I cut them?

I don't know about the blood. It could just be poryphrin and he has it because of a URI but I'm sure someone else can answer that better. As to the fleece, no you don't have to do anything but cut it. It doesn't unravel like most fabrics. :)
