Thanks I will call and see if what age he does girls.....but if he doesn't do boys until 12 weeks he probably doesn't do girls until then either......
I think Piper was about 5 to 6 months old when I got her.......so that would make her about 7 to 8 months now.......yeah I should get her in sooner then later......I will call and get her an appointment in 2 to 3 weeks........

Dahlas said,
I can see the big sign now....."Welcome to Nova Scotia.....cheapest place to have your rats neutered"..........

Well, I've gotta say it's better than our new NB tourism slogan, which has made us the laughingstock of Canada. Would you believe that our government spent $250,000 of our hard-earned tax dollars to PAY somebody to come up with the following slogan:

"Be ... in this place"

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this is ridiculous. I couldn't restrain myself. Our province's Tourism dept never fails to amaze me.

Local radio shows are having informal contests to come up with a better slogan. A national radio show had a feature about our new slogan this week. Everybody thinks it's pretty funny and pretty pathetic.

So I like Dahlas' suggested slogan for NS. Just think of how it would look in the tourist guides..... "Visit some rat-sisters, cuddle their rats, get yours neutered while you're at it, enjoy the Tall Ships or Celtic Colours while they are recovering". It works for me.

Just talked to SQ, and they are still doing OK. Quite a procedure for her to give them meds, though! Especially since the girls want no part of the Baytril. Wish I could be there to give them some of my chicken broth.

Day three .... Burrell and Sammy were neutered on Thrusday and I am very concerned.
Sammy is bleeding slightly ... Some blood on bedding, not much and wound has fresh blood on it.
All ratties are on baytril and metacam.
Neuters do not look good ... certainly not what my nonexotic vet in NB does!!

Will get pics of the others soon. They are presently sleeping and Jacobs pics didn't turn out.

This is suposed to be an experienced exotic vet.

Advice?

No, that doesn't look normal. None of my neuters looked like that.
The pictures are kind of blurry, so it is difficult to see. I can see what looks like a bit of swelling on Sammy in addition to the bleeding. A bit of swelling is normal, but it does look like he has damaged the area as well.
It looks to me as if the excess skin hasn't been tucked inside, which is unusual. If that is all it is, then I wouldn't be hugely concerned, but would keep them on the antibiotics because I would think there would be an increased chance of infection from it.
Sammy's picture concerns me more, I would have him in for a follow up exam. I think that you could get away with seeing another vet for that, not necessarily the one who did the neuter if you couldn't get an appointment.

Oh, that looks so different from the others. I would be worried, too. I hope that you can get Sammy into see the vet in the morning.

Are they acting uncomfortable?

It looks like they folded the skin a bit tighter. Could be a lot of excess glue there.
The pic is blurry, the job is crappy but I don't know if it's all that bad.

Sorry about the blurry pics ... holding rattie in one hand and camera in the other ..

Guess Artemis and Eli will not be getting neutered.
Then again if the job is ok just crappy, I may keep their appointment for Thurday .... Esther, Debbie, Eli, and Artemis are scheduled to be altered on Thursday ... Of course if I cancel the boys, the girls will not be going either ... will find the money to take the girls to my vet in NB.

How is Sammy looking today? He's the only one I am truly worried about.

How did they act after the surgery?

Where exactly is the incision, or is there 2?

I would def do the abs for awhile on all just in case.

Took all of the pictures today.
Ratties are sleeping right now.
They are all active, licky and curious as usual, eating ok.

Sammy was bleeding a bit when I got him at the vets last week so the vet took him out back for close to an hour. He was ok when returned to me.
Sammy seems to have one very long incision.

This afternoon I noticed some blood on the cage bedding.

So he could just have massive bruising then?

If he's acting well and they are all reacting the same way as your other boys that got neutered previously I wouldn't worry too much. Is the blood bright red or older?

Oh I hope everyone is okay.....I have never seen a rat neuter so I don't know what looks good or bad.....but I wouldn't want to see to much blood, or an angry seeping incision.......
How where the girls spays....did everyone look okay?

Bright red wet blood, a bit last night.
Dried old blood on him and bedding today.
But fortunately not much of it.

Previous neuters with nonexotic vet in NB were clean, small, neatly sewn incisions. Nothing at all like this!!!

It looks like a different method of meeting up the skin and longer incision.
But if they are happy active ratties, I don't think I'd be all that worried.
A bit of blood is normal as well in some cases.

Thank you all.
I will keep a close eye on them and wait a few days before deciding what to do about the remaining 4 ratties.

Will get pics of the girls posted.
They are also on baytril and metacam. They hide from me as they do not like taking their meds ... the boys, however, think meds are a wonderful treat.

This vet did Grace in Jan. She seemed to be ok. I paid the much more expensive exotic vet to examine her and make sure the other guy had done a good job before booking appointments for surgeries for the other 16 ratties.

Not sure about taking him back to the same vet but have an appointment in about 30 mins.
Thought he was doing a bit better today but it seems to be bothering him and I can see a very small amount of fresh blood.
This should not be happening this long after surgery. :(

Oh my......how are all the other boys?
I hope he is okay....sometimes complications do crop up.
My cat rejected every kind of stitches they used during her spay.....at the shelter we have hundreds of cats spayed yearly and she was the only one that had any problems.....It was nerve wrecking at the time but once it healed it was all over and she has been fine ever since. Hopefully with you boy it is nothing to serious and will get cleared up soon.........

Took Sammy to the vets and his brother Burrell went along for company. Vet said that Burrell looks good.
After examining Sammy, he said that Sammy has a blood clot that is breaking down, which is a good thing. He said that Sammy should heal up fine.

I am very relieved.
Sammy seems to be feeling ok.
Both boys are very happy to be back home.
