Thanks for all of your good thoughts and wishes for the ratties.

Just phoned and all four are doing well. :D
They will not be ready to come home for several hours tho, so I will be picking them up after my evening class.
Can't wait to get them home and give them a cuddle.

I will feel better when they are home safe & sound, under SQ's tender care. My dear little Robyn & Lymanette, I hate to think of them in pain. I am such a wimp when rats get surgery.

And the dear boys. They are such big healthy boys, so loving, that I was terrified that something bad would happen to them in surgery. They are the sweetest and liveliest boys you could ever imagine.

Waiting anxiously for SQ to call or post. She's probably at the vet's right now....

Now home with the ratties and have them settled in with yummy food, hot water bottles, etc.

They all seem to be doing ok ... tho Lymanette and Burrell and Sammy are not as active as Robyn. Had to wait at the vet's over an hour as when I first got them I noticed that Sammy was bleeding so the vet took him out back.

Very glad they are home :)

Rebecca, Leona, Peter and Jacob went into the vet this am for spays and neuters. Hope everything goes ok. A bit worried because Rebecca was in heat last night but the vet didn't seem to think it would be a problem.

Guess I will no longer have to be concerned about those two girls ... their favorite activity is to escape and climb onto the boys cage (located in a different room) where they race around on the outside of the cage screaming. This gets the boys very excited and they run around on the inside of the cage jumping around and making lots of noise. Fortunately no one decided to copulate and with all the noise I quickly discovered where the girls were. Very relieved that this will be a thing of the past ...

The 4 girls and 4 boys that have been already neutered and spayed seem to be doing ok.

Well this morning I when I had to medicate Ralphie, Charlotte, and the 8 spayed and neutered ratties, I fondly recalled when I only had 3 ratties

All these spays and neuters are stressful but it needs to be done ...
Would have liked to have gotten it done in early January but this was as soon as I could get appointments.
Only one more group to go ... appointment is next week
Then I will be able to relax a bit ... I hope.

I would be bankrupt if I had to neuter such an abundant little family of rats!

A spay/neuter, for ONE rat, in this area costs $254!!!

What a con!!!!!!!! They should be ashamed of themselves!!!! :scolding:

I hear you ...
A spay with the knowledgeable highly recommended exotic vet here costs over $200.

A spay with the vet whose ad says exotics and is experienced at spaying and neutering rats ... but not sure how knowledgeable he is at treating their illnesses - costs $40 per neuter and $75 per spay.
Since I am a student, I am able to get them all done at this price ... although it is not easy.
edit: plus tax

Otherwise I would be getting the 6 girls done by my wonderful vet at home in NB who charges $150 for a spay (note: the other 2 girls are Godmothers) - but I would not have been able to find the money to do the 8 boys.

Well, everyone is back home and not feeling that great but doing ok.
They are settled in with food, hot water bottles, etc.
All 4 are eating a bit of baby cereal and peas.

Some of you will have to consider vacationing in NS with your ratties and having the ratties altered at the same time ...
I should contact tourism Nova Scotia with a new slogan ....

I can see the big sign now....."Welcome to Nova Scotia.....cheapest place to have your rats neutered"..........

I am so glad to be able to have my boys done for $40 a piece and the girls for $75....I haven't mentioned to my hubby about getting the girls done......I will break it to him later on......

SQ do you know how old the girls have to be?
I know the vet told me 12 weeks for the boys but I forgot to ask about the girls......I might do 3 boys and two girls and Piper the first time...if they can get done at the same age.......(and I can save up that much money :) )
I know the boys have to be apart for 3 weeks after the surgery.........

It is best to do girl's as young as the vet will do it ...
My vets have always wanted them to be 3 or 4 months old as they were not trained exotic vets and wanted them to be a good size.
So it would depend on the vet as trained exotic vets such as jorats' vet can spay girls much younger than that.
For max health benefits I would have Piper done soon, within the next month or so - perhaps when the babies are 6 to 8 weeks. (Just guessing, since I don't know how old Piper is.)
