Guess who's got a PEW? :D
Alright so it doesn't show up on my iPod pics, the point is he opened his eyes and they're nice and red. People tell me it's freaky but I think he's the cutest thing. He's also getting fussy during feedings, he wants to explore and climb

Still kicking :) and they seem to be doing ok with Mae again, but I'm still feeding them after school
I'm worried about some of Mattiees babies, they have harder rounder bellies than I'd like and if it comes down to it, I don't know what I'll do since I don't have a spare dime for euthinizing them between feeding and housing everyone

It would be a horrible death, so euthanizing them is a must if they bloat up. The vet would probably give you a discounted rate if you had to bring in a bunch. I hope it doesn't come to that. :(

Even discounted is money, and at the moment I have exactly none from buying their cage :/ I have enough food to feed everyone until I get some next. But I'm not sure if they'll progress rapidly or if I'll have some time... I don't know. I'm calling some shelters to see if they could help me out, I could probably drop them off at the SPCA with a note about their condition, but I really don't want to have to do that
I don't want to have to watch them slowly linger either though :/
Or starve everyone for a month so their food money can go to vet bills
I'm looking into it but no ones responding or helpful.. Like last time with Mattiee. Argh

Mae's babies are starting to eat solid foods, so I guess we'll see soon enough for hers
As for Mattiees, two of them have it very bad. I can tell they're in pain
I want to separate Mattiee as soon as possible, she's on her way out. I brought her to the vet (who looked at her free of charge!) and she said there's nothing I can do besides keep her comfortable and preferably with an older calmer female, and try to feed her lots. Despite having lots to eat she's underweight still, and we breathing is labored more and more often. Her eyes are watery and her fur is thin. My vet said she seems like she's two years or older even though she's much younger, so i guess it's just from her poor living conditions in the past and over breeding
The guys who were supposed to ship out my cage weeks ago just called to say that not only have they not shipped it out, but they want and extra 195$ for shipping before they do. I'm at my wits end

they're all just so stinkin cute! I hope you can find homes for them all. that would be a shame if some of them have megacolon. :(

Three of them I'm positive are suffering from it :( They're more belly than rat already, and they're obviously in a lot of pain. I'm going to have to bring them to the local SPCA and ask if they can help, phone calls and emails aren't doing anything, but I'm sure if I explain that they need help they'll do SOMETHING. If not my local pet store (where I get my feeder mice, who are bred and cared for and euthanized properly) said she'll take care of them for me, they have a CO2 chamber for their mice and they feel bad for me since I've been in there asking for help rehoming.
On a positive note, last night the people who were supposed to send me my critter nation called, and today after an hour of scouring the internet I actually found someone within 10 minutes of me with a used one for sale for 200$, less if I bring one of my tanks for her retired hedgehog to go into, so I'm picking that up tomorrow or thursday and doing the happy dance at my insanely good luck :D
The babies have been with Mae for two days now and are doing great :) They're gaining weight at their own normal rates (they're still behind their older siblings) and are able to compete with everyone for food. Plus all of Mae's babies are starting to eat solid foods. They're doing great, actively roaming around the tank, drinking from the water bottle, chewing their toys I made them. I have higher hopes for these guys now that I can house them properly while they wait to find homes

If you are sure of three babies, then take them to the SPCA to be euthanized right away. It is a horribly painful way to die. Your vet, if ethical and caring about animals, will see the critical need for euthanization even if you don't have the money right now. Don't let them linger and die in so much pain. :(

CO2 is not humane and causes great suffering ... :sad3:
the best that can be said is that if they have megacolon they will die faster with CO2 then if you don't do anything ... but they will suffer horribly
Please see jorats report at viewtopic.php?f=26&t=18828

The SPCA will not help and will Not euthanize humanely. Please do not take them there.
Please see posts on your other thread.

If they have megacolon they need to be humanly put to sleep asap by a good vet who knows how to do it properly for rats.
They will need to be made unconscious with the oxygen/gas mix that vets use for surgery. Once deeply unconscious they will need to be injected (liver or abdomen missing all organs), and keep unconscious with the gas until they stop breathing and their hearts stop beating.
You will need to discuss the method with your vet and make sure it is done humanely.
Your vet may be willing to let you pay a bit over time. If not you will need to borrow money, find someone who will let you put it on their credit card, whatever.

please post pics or videos of the babies and of Mattiee
and pm lilspax68 when you have done this

Alright, no SPCA then, but would it be worth it to at least ask them about their methods? I guess they don't have to be honest about it...
I'll call my vet back, but when we visited she said money was too tight for freebies right now, I'll ask her again though. Having the process explained helps a little though, I was confused because people would tell me no no, needles are no good it has to be CO2, but then you guys are saying CO2 is no good either.. gah..
I'll take some more pictures tomorrow and try to get them up, I'll try for a video too, it should work now that my computers back up
I have to figure something out sooner than later, I'd like to go get it done this weekend, at least for the couple that are really bad already :/ I'll go over my options with my vet and my dad tomorrow and see what I can do. But "suffering for less time" might be the best I can aim for right now, which makes me feel awful, but, gah. This sucks.
Anyways, sleep now, report tomorrow

I'm sorry this is happening, but SQ is right, CO2 is most inhumane. There are two methods they can use with CO2 and both have been proven to be harsh on rats.
How much does your vet charge for euths?

A needle given by the vet is the humane way to do it
BUT they need to be unconscious when they are given the needle and kept unconscious until they are dead.
This is done by the vet rendering them unconscious using the gas/oxygen mix that vets use to during surgery to keep animals unconscious.

It is not humane for a conscious small animal to be euthanized with a needle because unlike dogs and cats, it can not be injected into a vein. Therefore, they must be unconscious as described above.

Since you have a relationship with your vet, see if she will do it humanely and if you can pay for it over time.
Most vets do not know how to do it humanely so your vet may want to speak with my vet, lilspaz68's vet, or jorats' vet.

The mama also needs medical care from a vet who is experienced with rats or else a good vet who is willing to consult with vets experienced with rats (such as my vet, lilspaz68's vet, or jorats' vet)
