Nirvana was supposed to get 1 drop(0,05ml) of meds twice a day.. Now she's going to have 2-3 drops..
Is that 0,1-0,15ml?

Can you not ask your vet for a more exact dose? Do you have syringes to measure doses?

I do have 1 ml syringes.
He said 0,05ml is one drop . But I forgot to ask how much the new dose was in ml(2-3 drops).
They are closed now, since it's evening here now.
I'm assuming it's 0,05*2-3?

Following that logic, yes, but 2-3 drops is not a precise dose. If you ask for the concentration of the suspension next time, you can double check the doses yourself.

That's why she's supposed to get ml.. I just forgot to ask.
But he also said she had a lot to go on(she could get I think he said up to 0,5-0,6ml with her weight).
It's to remove fluids from her lungs, so we're trying to find out how much she needs..

Today I was teasing my girl's as they slept and I noticed lots of gunk in Sophie's (Renamed from Sophia) ear, I woke her up and took her out to have a closer look...her right ear is nice and pink but the left one is crusted with gunk/maybe just wax ( like if I go in with a q-tip it would clean out).

Am I supposed to clean her ears sometime's, she's my first dumbo rat so her ears are humongous *lol*...she's also older and as you guy's say we sometime's need to help with the hygiene on older rat's!

She's an adopted rat, I had her two three months now so I dunno her that good what I found extremely weird tho is before I went to pick her and her sister up the women that previously owned them wanted to give them a bath wich lead's me to beleive she bathed them so I wonder if she knew to keep the ears clear from the water...
Sophie though a little skittish look's normal so I can rule out any previous ear infections!

So what is the gunk...
Just gunk I can help her clean out...
Do dumbo rat's specialy older dumbo rat's require periodique ear cleaning...

Thank you for the help!

Ear gunk in the ear sounds like an ear infection to me...but I cannot be sure. I have two male dumbo rats, but they aren't even a year yet. I never seen gunk in their ears before, and I've checked them before and never had to clean them, they been pretty good at keeping them clean themselves. So I'm not sure, hopefully someone else can answer this for you.

My question is:

Gizmo was neutered almost 3 weeks ago giver take, Gyro not more then a month and 2 weeks ago. Today they got into a box fight, Gyro was puffed up, Gizmo wasn't puffed but he was certaintly pushing his ground and aggressively following Gyro around till I broke it up. No blood or cuts. However I thought this nonsense of theirs would stop by now. Is it just Gizmo's hormones haven't toned yet? Or do they just flat out don't get along off and on?

My Stefan got gunk in his ear when he became old.
we tried antibiotics for 3 weeks, and it helped(the gunk was pretty much green at first :sick2: ), but it didn't stop.. We could not find any reason for it, and he had no other symptoms(no neuro problems except HED, no headtilt etc).
the vet tought it could be a polyp in his ear(there were no sign of the gunk was innflammation), but he couldn't find something.
In the end we ended up flushing it with ear cleaner for dogs a couple of times a day to keep him comfortable.

I hope someone can be more of a help and that you find out what it is.
(photo in spoiler for space). I think the pic is after the antibiotics. I can't seem to find the before picture :wallbang:

You should never have to clean any animal's ears (nor your own actually) if they are healthy and normal. Cleaning ear wax can actually result in injuries or infections. I have never seen rats produce wax like you describe, so I also think it's very likely an ear infection. Get her to the vet ASAP, if she gets a head tilt they are very difficult to correct.

Edit: Missguardian posted while I was typing. I think her experience is very unusual, I would go to the vet.

I have never dealt with it before or since either. I too would take her to the vet(forgot to mention that :giggle: )
Weird part for me was the complete lack in other symptoms.

I would give them more time. Some take longer than others to mellow.

Exactly, more time.
But, the important thing is no blood or cuts. Your males are behaving normally, it's all part of living together as a colony.

can an 17-18 mos old male rat have HED????

my boy Teddy is dragging his back feet......

He has seemed "off" for some time now, I took him the vet, she thought maybe he had a soft tissue injury and gave me metacam to give him. He was much improved after the first dose, and only seemed to need the meds for 3 days, then he was ok without it

But he's never seemed totally himself since then.

He has always had a kind of waddling walk, much more so than any other rat I've had, his back end sways back and forth when he walks

could he have some anatomical anomaly that makes him more prone to getting HED early?

ok this is no longer a quick question

I'm uploading a video of him to YouTube will post it when its ready

EDIT here's the video, you can see him walking around at about the 2 min point or just before

My stefan Started his HED around 18 months.. But our rats have way shorter life spans tho..
I hope you find out what it is..

I am trying to remember when my rats first showed signs of HED. I *think* they were over 2. But each rat is individual. And it's hard to say where the problem stems from; if it's muscular, peripheral neuropathy, or something central like a PT. I would prep the cage for him - I saw one of my boys get his foot stuck in the ramp while he was sitting at the bottom of it and if I hadn't been there he would have injured himself getting it out, so now my ramps are all covered (with socks!). Time will tell with your boy. If it's a PT then you will want to start therapy as soon as you can, but you don't want to treat him unnecessarily either.

Sorry I have no info on this issue, but I'd say you're in good hands with everyone elses advice, but ya just keep an eye on him like everyone else is. I would say his walk is cute to watch, but at the same time ya it's probably not a good thing... He's still a very adorable boy!
