Heys everyone! I just had a quick question and request from you. I know that rats chew on wood and things like that with no problem, so I don't know if this question is dumb or not. But I was wondering if it'd be safe to get one of those bird toys with the wood, string knots, pumice stone type blocks, and small rawhide chews? Is rawhide bad for rats?

Can anyone give me suggestions on what I can use to enrich the boys' cage? Currently they have a hammock, a bird toy that Godmother graciously bought for me (it's chewed to pieces, Wendy! They love it!), and a corner litterpan level. Until I get the second cage added on top, that's all, but I have tonnes of toys that I give them on the bed when they're out, including a jingle-bell cat toy, which they love! Any other ideas you guys can suggest for toys?

Mine love having a small paper bag (all the more excuse to go to Tim Horttons??) or an empty Kleenex box in their cage to hide in, play in, and then chew to bits. You can get a pack of 50 paper bags for $1 at Dollarama.

I use just about every small cardboard box that we get. keeps them busy! :D

Wooden baby blocks are great fun here. Carry 'em around, put them in the food dish to try and hide the precious, precious food, or throw them off levels and listen to the noise they make when they bounce or hit the bottom!

My girls have dozens of bird toys. I try and get the ones without shells, stones, and things like that. The rope, plastic, paper, and wood ones are the favorites. The rubber ones get demolished very quickly, and I wasn't 100% sure my girls at the time weren't actually ingesting it. So I only recommend those ones if you've got light chewers or you can be sure they're just chewing on it and not eating it.

You can even make your own if you've got a small drill bit. Some cheap baby blocks, large plastic beads, bits of rope and wood. You can just string it all together and make some really creative stuff. Just make sure everything's non toxic.

I also put pingpong balls in the cage, I see them moving them around with their nose, trying to pick them up. Too funny.
I check out our local dollar stores at cat toys, dog ropes, baby stuff too.

My groups have lots of bird toys, they are an absolute favourite! I am kind of creeped out over rawhide, so I try and stick to the ones that are mainly wooden and twine, but a couple do have a little rawhide on them.
I just always steer clear of any with bells on them, the balls they have already have bells and it can be extremely noisy.
