The bromocriptine seems to be kicking in. No more dex for her just the pills. :)

Someone had to have a bath this morning, she was a little crusty :giggle:

Her sister is an amazing barometer on how Shade is doing...when Shade's not well, Syra is quite gentle, but when Shade's feeling better, all the shoving and head-stepping-on starts up again... Don't worry, Shade usually shoves back. :laugh4:

Getting this pic as a bit tricky with Syra around. :wink2:

Bromo breakfast...she loves it, and she's soooo bright today :joy:

I sent this to my vet yesterday..

Hi Dr. Munn,

I just wanted you to know I have another little older lady (22 mo) who
developed PT symptoms. She wasn't the right case study since she also
has a tumour that is attached to her chest wall and growing quickly.
But once she showed the symptoms I said to heck with it because she's
a wonderful little character and started her on the bromo. She is
responding really really well. So she might turn into a good one to
watch. She's a sweet little tilty girl who came to me starving, I got
the weight back on her (and then some) but then she developed the
classic symptoms, but is improving daily on the bromocriptine. From
falling over to climbing on the cage bars this morning.

I did notice one thing I thought was very interesting. In my
observations I have noticed that once PT presents itself, its like the
body stops. For eg. If the rat had surgery, healing stops, etc.
Last night little Shade was running around and she was actually in
heat! I have never seen that before which is probably another good
thing to show a life of continued normalcy on the bromocriptine.

I have included pics so you can see her progress. I didn't want to
bother you with it just in case she didn't respond.

Arrival Oct 2011 (14 mo old)

Apr 28/12 - I give them 1 dose of dex to hold them over until the
bromo kicks in (2-3 days it seems). She was falling over, huddled,
barely able to use her front paws, very confused, dull eyes and no
"edge behaviour" would just walk/fall off.

Apr 29 - Eyes brighter, fur smoother, more dexterity but still not too
much with front paws, much more mobile, edge behaviour is back.

Apr 30 - even better, able to rear up and grasp food items etc

May 1 - same

May 2 - more improvement

May 3 - running around, active, in heat, still not that great with
front paws but that seems to be a slow improvement.

He sent back...

Excellent!

Dr. Munn

I'm so happy that Shade is getting the love that she needs. Even better that Syra understands. Shade seems like such a sweetheart. Hopefully I can come by and visit her again soon. :)

Wonderful news!!!
She is looking great!

Are you giving bromo + pred (+ antibiotic)
Godmother has had amazing results with the bromo pred combo

No, I give the dex to kickstart, then its strictly bromo. She has a mild URI so she is getting baytril as well.

OK PT update. Dr Munn at his last exotics conference not long ago, talked to the "horses mouth" or in otherwards the vet who is doing the research on PT in rats and bromo/cabergoline, etc.

He told me that the bromocriptine gives you about 80% effectiveness but the Cabergoline is more like 95%. BUT its very very hard to get in Canada and very expensive. He priced it at $945 for 30 ml's compounded. BUT he is going to see if he can get it in himself and make it up himself for his rat owners that want to try it. He's going to let me know what happens and what pricing we would be looking at.

I know with the bromo its hit and miss because it has to be the right type of pituitary adenoma, and there are a few. I wonder if the cabergoline is more effective on the different types? I know they use it almost exclusively in the UK, called Galastop, and its not expenesive there at all. I will likely post on Fancy Rats and see what they can tell me.

He also said that if a girl has a tumour removed, if an owner wants to, its suggested to put the girl on bromo for the rest of her life and it should prevent any tumours from recurring. Most owners won't do this, but some might.

Constantly paying for meds would be difficult for any owner in my opinion, but if some are able to do it then I tip my hat to them, I wouldn't blame others who said they couldn't though. Glad to hear your sweet girl is doing ok though :D

the bromocriptine is not expensive though...a month cost me $25.00.

That's good for you, unfortunetly meds here aren't cheap, baytril for me alone costed me 67$ for a whole bottle that would last a month for two rats

I had a girl, Lulu on Cabergoline, she was 27 months at the time. She lived another 3 months with a very good quality of life and vet found no tumor on post. But it was expensive, 400 dollars a month. And Cabergoline did not have any side effects like the Bromo.
