Hi all, I have two 7 week old girls and one 8 month old girl. All three have URIs which I have been treating them for, for the last week. However, yesterday I noticed that they had symptoms of ringtail. The babies have a faint annular band and some minor tail constrictions, no discoloration. My older girl has only a couple tail constrictions, no annular band or discoloration. There is no severe pinching or swelling, and gangrene has not set in. I think I caught it very very early on judging by my research, and I think they should be able to make a full recovery if I do things right. I know part of it is the changing temps and that my landlords are the worst and won't turn off the heat (I yelled at them and got them to turn it down a little) but I'm sure a little bit of dehydration from antibiotics-induced diarrhea doesn't help either.

So far I have put a humidifier by their cage (which is in hallway nook that protects from drafts), and stopped trying to cool the apartment with an A/C (which creates a cool air draft). I have two radiators in my apartment -- in the bathroom and kitchen. I have closed the door to my bathroom, and opened the window in my kitchen to let that hot air out. I have successfully made my apartment a consistent 72-73 degrees F and humidity hovering around 50% though I'm trying to get it up a bit higher. I also am applying olive oil 2x daily. However, I have ordered pure lanolin (for moisture -- I've read in some university studies that it is a good treatment) and calendula/coconut oil to stimulate blood flow. I have also increased their intake of omega 3 fatty acids with avocado and olive oil (since they are licking it off their tails). I have also given them a big, stable bowl of water, with occasional frozen peas to splash around in to cool off if they need to.

However, I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas about how to handle/treat ringtail? Or if anyone has any success stories to make me feel better about this and that they will bounce back?

It's very mild! There isn't any pinching. The babies just have a faint ring around the base of their tail, and then a "lumpy" tail, that's barely visible but you can definitely tell if you look closely or touch it.

So far I can report that it definitely hasn't gotten worse. My 8 month old rat actually looks totally better. But the babies always were worse.

Update!!!! Lanolin worked wonders! I treated them with olive oil until the lanolin arrived-- the olive oil certainly halted the progress of the ringtail. But the lanolin removed ALL symptoms in 48 hours. Wow! Everyone must try pure lanolin if their rats get ringtail! FYI I'm continuing to treat, so I have 2 weeks of treatment, just to be safe.

I am very new to the rat shack forum but after I read you thread I really wanted to share.

I had a couple of babies with ringtail a few years ago. I was caused by my house being extremely dry during the winter months. I treated by smothering their tails in Olive Oil 2 x a day and taking them in the bathroom once a day while I showered (If I didn't need a shower I would run one for them lol). I also put a humidifier in the rat room, which helped slightly i really think I got the most results from the shower and oil. It is great to hear that the Lanolin worked that quick. It took me approximately 33 days to heal the babies.

I took pictures of their progress here is a link if you would like to see. http://s1156.photobucket.com/user/rattuity/slideshow/

This is really helpful to know. I've never encountered ringtail before, and I wouldn't have known what to do. Rat Shack members always seem to come up with an answer!

Haha i know this post is over ten years old but i just wanted to say thanks for the idea of Lanolin! It’s winter now and i got my two rats a few months ago and have just noticed some ringtail. I’ve added a humidifier, moved the cage away from a vent, and used olive oil. I’m definitely gonna bring them in the shower room with me and see if that helps! But I’ll be sure to order some Lanolin as well!
