Eli and I are back from the vet now. His eye is very infected, but we are hoping that with the addition of another antibiotic (in this case doxy), and a second pain med (tramadol) we'll see if we can improve things, before deciding on more drastic measures since the surgery is soo fresh. IF his eye looks ANY worse than today, then he goes in on Monday morning, and we could end up opening it up again, and cleaning it out.
When I do these drop-off in the mornings before work, pickup after work, I don't get a regular appointment with my vet to discuss things etc., but the payoff is that I don't need an appointment. This time I sat in the lobby with my vet discussing Eli's eye/surgery. It was the worst one he had ever seen with a rat. His eye had exploded inwards which meant there was a lot of bacteria inside, which my vet flushed and flushed but that's most likely what is causing this. His eye was detached from a lot of the normal points (muscles hold the eye in place and direct the movements, etc) and was only held on by a few at the back and of course the optic nerve. His eye was actually inverting in those pictures.
So I now get to give 2 extra meds twice a day to the rat who FIGHTS medications... : But that's okay, we can only cross our fingers that things resolve although my gut instinct says we will be opening it up again on Monday, but rats and their amazing bodies/healing powers can still surprise me!
