Eli and I are back from the vet now. His eye is very infected, but we are hoping that with the addition of another antibiotic (in this case doxy), and a second pain med (tramadol) we'll see if we can improve things, before deciding on more drastic measures since the surgery is soo fresh. IF his eye looks ANY worse than today, then he goes in on Monday morning, and we could end up opening it up again, and cleaning it out.

When I do these drop-off in the mornings before work, pickup after work, I don't get a regular appointment with my vet to discuss things etc., but the payoff is that I don't need an appointment. This time I sat in the lobby with my vet discussing Eli's eye/surgery. It was the worst one he had ever seen with a rat. His eye had exploded inwards which meant there was a lot of bacteria inside, which my vet flushed and flushed but that's most likely what is causing this. His eye was detached from a lot of the normal points (muscles hold the eye in place and direct the movements, etc) and was only held on by a few at the back and of course the optic nerve. His eye was actually inverting in those pictures.
So I now get to give 2 extra meds twice a day to the rat who FIGHTS medications... ::) But that's okay, we can only cross our fingers that things resolve although my gut instinct says we will be opening it up again on Monday, but rats and their amazing bodies/healing powers can still surprise me!

Here is my communication with the rats town woman.
In response to an ad entitled "Rats Town Rattety Dumbo Blue Russian Mixes Babies Ready to Go",
I wrote:

Come on, you guys. First of all, you have so many spelling mistakes in your ad. Plus, you know you are not legitimate breeders. Please give it up. You will not make any money unless you do feeders and that's just wrong (you know that). You will never have credibility as breeders unless you do shows in the US, have many years of experience, keep records of bloodlines for many generations, etc., etc.
I've been seeing your ads since you announced your new "Rattery" (not "rattety" as in your ad) just before Christmas. Why don't you be a rescue and just love them and enjoy them and give them a great life??? You could still do adoptions. But, PLEASE don't breed. :( There are so many needy rats out there. And oopsie litters.) If you really love rats, you'll rethink your "business".
The rats and babies in your "ads" are adorable, but there is a lot of poop in the pics. Plus, are they on cedar or pine shavings? Because those oils are irritating to their respiratory systems. Hopefully it's aspen, which is fine, but most rat experts use a paper-based substrate. Please go on the internet and research proper rat care and ethics.

She responded:

well what is your beef we have no problems with our litters so what is it to you what we do is our business to do what we want unless we are step in on your business so knock it off we doing what we want to and you can't stop me ok
how do you know we don't have this stuff
records of bloodlines
credibility
we have many years of experience
we have a good customer base that keep coming back to buy more & more and are send people our way
and we are making good money as well

I wrote back:

It IS my business when animals are being exploited. Repeat customers for rats? - says reptile food to me.
What is the ideal diet for rats?
What are the three most common medical problems in rats?
Why shouldn't blaze varieties ever be bred?
What professional organizations do you belong to?
You just opened your "business" in the fall - I remember seeing the announcement ads.
That's not many years of experience. That's a "backyard breeder" deciding to create an ad.
How far back do your records go? and where did you get your original rats from?
Where do you get your new stock from?
Are you mentored by a well-established breeder?
Who's your veterinarian?
If you can't or won't answer any of these questions, than you have no business claiming to be a professional business and what you are doing is unethical

And the response (I stopped wasting my time after this):

who are you to think you are to know everything about rats what makes it your business why don't you pick on other people and leave use alone and also all those questions are for me to know and are none of your dam business ok now knock it off and leave me alone.

:gaah: I am sooo glad they are done.

Edit - forgot to say that this was back in March

jam: goodness, you handled that so much better than I would have... I need to really learn to follow in the example of people like you. Kudos to you for trying. & lets all pray these people are really done. Sickening.

 :tumkiss: for Eli, Emma & the rest of the rat pack!!!

If you can get some Traumeel from Superstore (in the health food section) it really helps in healing. Boosts the immune system and goads the body into fighting the infection and inflammation. At our clinic they actually bathe tissues in the injectible when they do surgery. You can't get the liquid ampules at Superstore but can get the tablets. You can cut them in quarters and see if Eli will eat it like a treat or dissolve in water and then give a few drops morning and night. He doesn't have to injest it, it just has to touch mucous membranes and I've given it rectally when a rat was really having a rough go with oral meds. For some reason they don't mind stuff up their butts as much as in their mouths.

Traumeel is an energy medicine so store away from the fridge and microwave as they'll disturb the energy signature. We've had some pretty speedy healings with it.

Super healing vibes to Eli.

Gilbert's incision has opened up at the bottom and its leaking pus again...sigh, these poor rats just have NO immune system. :sad3:

Emma is also NOT responding to the steroid therapy.

The immune booster will have to wait until next week as I am out of cash until next Thursday. :(

So back to better things...the younger cage in the Corral :D

Wow I have been so busy I haven't seen this thread till now. Great job in rescueing them all! So many of them have such sick looking eyes poor kids. That's insane the conditions they were in. Hopefully all the sickies pull through well. :hugs:

Not responding. I think she has given up. I think she's enjoying the loving and cuddles and special attention she is getting, but she's limp and uncoordinated. I am continuing the dex for the slight euphoric effect.
