Here's the situation. I was hoping someone may be able to give me some advice. D:

My parents offered to get me the martin's ferret playpen for my boys for christmas, since they want me to have them somewhere other than my bed. They said that at $57.50 plus tax, that wouldn't be bad. But to ship it to my place, it costs an additional $85! They won't go for it there!

I was wondering if anyone knew how I could go about still getting it, without having to pay so much for shipping. Does anyone have one that they'd be willing to sell? Does anyone know of anywhere in canada where I could get one? Would anyone offer to get it for me and ship it to me cheaper, if I were to pay them for it? I'm just trying to throw around some possibilities here, because I really want it. D:

Please, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

They are really heavy and bulky and that is why they cost so much to ship. If a regular person went into the post office it would actually probably cost them much more than that.

There are no Canadian distributors. :(

Have you thought about making a 3' high or so playpen out of coroplast? I think that might be the most economical way.

You would have to make a top though... since they can climb up those cubes.

If you use 3' of straight coroplast they can't climb it so you don't need a top.

Yep a corplast corral is what I suggest. Make sure its big enough for you to sit in with them, since we are the Bestest Rat Toys Evah!

These are boys? You can probably get away with the 2' standard width/height of most coroplast lengths. Its cheap and with zip ties you have a handy dandy enclosure you can fill with toys. :)

The martins playpen, would make it difficult for you to be in there with them. You would need the top on because those buggers climb real fast. If the top is on, you have to lie down it.
I have a martins playpen but it's only used when I need to put the rats in a different area unsupervised.. while cage cleaning.

I use a coroplast to keep my rats in their dining room. I works great, you can make it however tall you want. Ask your parents to pick up big sheets of coroplast, cut it to your liking, attach together using zipties and there's your playpen.

No, unless they can get their teeth on a side edge, then they can start to go through but if you make it tight enough with the zipties, there's no getting through. I've been using coroplast for over 4 years and never had one chew through, I did have some chew the ziptie so had to replace a few. Once I had to make it taller because the young ones could just up the 2' side, so had to make it 3'.

Mine is 4' high everywhere except where I can open the panels (with Velcro) to get in and out. Even that is 2.5 feet high. Nobody has been able to jump out yet, but I have changed my rat room recently and I am going to get 6' high panels for behind the cages. My girls love to climb, and I have just been lucky/vigilant or they would have escaped from the cage to the coroplast to the outside.

6' sounds awfully high, but it also protects the walls. I once had my cages in front of venetian blinds, and they got REALLY gross!

Another think to consider is the cost of Coroplast here. I think it's about $20-25 for a 4'x8' sheet. If you make a big playpen, that can add up. If Riana uses 2' high panels, she can get a 24' perimeter playpen for $75. That's a six foot square, so should be great.

2' is NOT high enough, especially if you plan to have anything in there for them to play with.

Trust me... I know. Maggie showed me within minutes that it was not high enough.

I'm lucky cause so far, my current crew haven't realized they can jump the 2' coroplast.
My sister has a 5' wall of china for her group. I swear, those rats were originally cast for the cirque du soleil.

I have been using 4, 4 foot pieces of plywood hinged together like an accordian. It works but they have started to chew right through the edges. It is 2 1/2 feet tall and Jazmine can almost make it up and out but she is shy about 2 inches. It is kind of heavy but I need it to be sturdy to keep the dogs out.

My god, I really want those coroplast thingys!
But I have no idea where to find them here in Norway, so... :/
Will probably have to use wood or something..
