Whoa there, slow down. I'm not assuming, bragging or anything here. I'm glad that Brittany was able to take care of them. All I'm just saying is that, there is a limit as what's reasonable in terms of being able to take others in. Especially animals that are pregnant, Brittany's case is an exception as she wasn't aware of the potential litter. All I am is saying, is before we go taking in pregnant animals, make sure you have the room (and permission if needed) and budget to do so. Maybe I came off a little strongly there, but if I was put in the same situation, I'd be doing the same thing. However, as much as it pains me to say so, I will not take in an animal if I do not have the means or the space to do so. I hate crowding things together, but that's just me.

As for the shelter thing, I guess things work differently out east compared to here in Gatineau, the local animal shelter keeps small pets for quite some time. If they can't find a home, they'll be fostered out to appropriate places. Some of the local elementary schools take in some of the smaller animals to teach kids responsibility (well atleast the one I went to and some of my cousins).

As for the bragging bit, I'm not. I'm not afraid to layout the facts about myself to help people understand where I'm coming from. I understand that there are people who earn less than I do and manage to care for a good number pets as well and I applaud them for that, but I've also learned to live within my means and not rely on credit cards, etc. (save for my student loan that I'm paying off) and by doing so I've set limits for how much I can spend so that I can save for any unforeseen events. The last thing I need and fear are all 3 of my boys getting sick or something worse and I don't have the money for a vet....

There is, but you don't know other peoples limits, like mine or Brittanys. We have the space, and were willing to care for the babies until they found good homes. We "were not sure" what we were going to do because it's a lot harder to find rat owners in our area then it is in say... Ontario. And if Brittany realized she didnt have the space or whatever for the babies, i would have taken them for her, as i have a rescue operation (as noted in my signature). I have a massive space for the rats, a very large cage, and multiple space cages. They would have been well taken care of, and put up for adoption.

I will not take in an animal if I do not have the means or the space to do so.

Understandable, but as stated previous, there would have been space and means.

Lots of people live within their means. Neither Brittany nor I have a credit card, nor do we have any real expenses at this time (Joey and I do, but it's not a lot) and we both always have the money available for vet care when needed.

Your post just came off as you saying that Brittany was wrong in taking in the female, and you assuming she was pregnant when she took her in. You also sounded like you were putting forward that because she doesn't have as much money, that she was incapable of taking in more rats. She knows her limits, and this rescue was within them.

I'm not going to even bother reading the bickering, but I hope it gets cleared up because people online tend to jump to conclusions.

I just wanted to add quickly that possible postpartum gestation with delayed implantation can be up to 40 days in the extreme, with 35-38 days being highly possible.

It wasn't my intention to put her in the wrong, but I've learned from experience not leap, then look... I lost my first budgie that way (she didn't die, but I did the stupid thing of getting her and everything only to hit a snag and not able to afford food after a while and had to give her up) and it was quite hard on me because she was the friendliest thing around and would come to me when I called her name. I don't doubt that people don't have the ability to look after their pets, but I hate to see people go through the same thing I did though. It's not pleasant, but the good news is I've kept in touch with her current owner and she's doing good so far. 5 years old and counting!

I understand.

And Moon, I understand as well. I'm done arguing over this thread, it's pointless, and this thread is meant to be about Molly and Brittany. If it continues, it will be through PM's. I apologise.

Anyway, Brittany. I'm glad to hear Molly isn't pregnant. She is too young to be spending the next few months dealing with babies. Now she can be a normal, happy rattie girl. And join your colony so she can have some female friends! :giggle:

:happydance: for no more bubs! Molly's just a baby herself.. time to act like one! She and her beau are lucky to have been pulled.

This reminds me of that little saying.. When you assume you make an ass out of you and me. :giggle:

When i worked there they had bunnies for the longest time(last year) lately i have not been going there but i would think they do not as here in Hull they are a no kill shelter; i know i worked there for a bit.

Im not sure of the one in Gatineau though but the Aylmer/Hull one does not kill the animals unless way too ill.

Mind you i have never seen rats there yet.

No kill shelters are not a good idea ..... either they become so overcrowded that they can not give animals proper care or else they have to stop taking in animals. A humane death is better then what life can turn into at places like overcrowded no kill shelters.

Every animal deserves a good, loving home but most never get that. :sad3:
Shelters where animals are pts because of space are horrible but better then the alternative.
Some shelters may not need to have animals pts very often, others may need to do it every day. It must be so very hard to work there.

I regret to inform you all, but Molly was indeed pregnant, and had 9 pinkies today.

I'm excited for the babies, but this should not have happened.

All of them have milk bands :)
But when I found them, there was one on the bottom cage on the floor and the rest were up top in the nest.
I put that little one back, and seems to be doing fine.

what? what cage are they in?

there's shouldn't be an "up and down" in a cage with a mother and babies until the babies have eyes open and are eating on their own..
