Try to use your hands and scoop her up rather than grasp her around the middle. Did they send you home with metacam? They can be pretty dopey and quiet after surgery. This afternoon she should be more like herself :)

They didn't send me home with anything. I know that they gave her a "pain injection" after surgery, but I don't know what exactly it was.

Ugh, 2 incisions and no pain meds. :/ Can you pick up liquid infant Advil at the store? Give us a guesstimate on her weight? We can then give you a dose so she's more comfortable and won't pick and impede her healing.

I found the vet invoice, she weighs 423gm and she got Banamine and Baytril injections.

Banamine will wear off and she will likely need pain meds for a couple of days. I would pick up the Advil. It comes in tiny bottles and the fav is the grape flavoured, dye-free. Its good to keep on hand for emergencies like a sprained foot where you are trying to stop the swelling, etc.

Thanks for the info, I'll pick some up within the next couple hours
What's the dosage and how do I give it to her? How do I know when she doesn't need it anymore?

Thank you!

At 423 grams and dosing at 20 mg/kg her dose would be .21 cc's every 4-6 hours. The recommended dosages are 10-30 mg/kg so I went halfway. You can give her up to .32 cc's but see if the lower dosage makes her more comfortable first.

Make sure its INFANT not childrens otherwise you will be having to give twice as much. Ahh its called Pediatric Drops :)

The bottle looks like this

Yeah, she was up and about this morning, but she definitely looked uncomfortable. I'm heading to the store now

Ok, so I went to the store and they don't have infant Advil, they have two brands of infant acetaminophen, but Advil is ibuprofen, so I wanted to check back and ask here before I bought it. Can I go with the acetaminophen or do I need to go to a different store?

Try a different store, If you can get childrens liquid ibuprofen that's fine too...its good for swelling, and pain which is why we use it.

Ok, got the stuff and gave it to her, hopefully she'll feel better soon.

Aside from the one that didn't have it, the closest grocery store is over a mile and a half away, I don't have a car, so I texted my mom and asked if she could pick some up and bring it to me. Her response:
Nothing says mothers love like driving across town first thing in the morning to deliver pain meds to your daughter's pet rat.
:giggle: :hugs:

Two things happened when I gave Crass the Advil. One, she tried to steal the syringe, and two, I accidentally squirted most of it out into her cage  . Luckily it landed all in one spot and she licked it right up.

Yay! So glad to hear she pulled through everything okay!
It's good she wanted to steal your syringe, it means giving her pain meds won't be difficult :giggle:

Also, not hugely important, but I can't see any of the images in this thread =(
Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah, she went crazy for it, I just hope I don't squirt it all over the place next time  . I think I'm just gonna feet it to her in a spoon from now on.

I've had that problem on other threads, but not consistently.

Actually, it's only your images I can't seem to view, Spork. Lilspaz's showed up
=s

I think it's a problem with my image hosting, I should be able to fix it in the next couple days.

When I went to give Crass her latest dose of Advil, I noticed that her incision had opened up  . I freaked out but luckily Moon was on chat to talk me talk me down and tell me what to do :hugs: . The opening is about 3/4 of an inch, but its hard to tell because she's so squirmy. It doesn't seem to be bleeding, but I did see a few little spots of blood in he pile of tissues. I'm going to keep trying to get pics.

According to Moon I just need to keep it clean, keep giving her pain meds, and make sure she isn't messing with it.
I'm pretty sure the vet said I get a free follow up, so there's no reason not to take her in tomorrow, even if it would heal on it's own.

Is it glued, stitched what? Is she pulling at it or licking it?

Sounds like time to wrap your rat. Do you have any tensor bandages lying around? Gauze pads as well?

Ok, she's stitched back up :joy:

I'm glad I made the call to go to the emergency vet. It got too bad too fast. By the time I was able to get out of the house, it was bleeding, gaping, and looked really bad. She wouldn't stop messing with it, and I couldn't distract her for more that a few seconds, even with a handful of dried fruit dumped into her cage.

The EV said that she had torn it open down to the muscle, and she had to trim the edges of the incision because it was so torn up. Crass got two layers of subcutaneous sutures and skin glue, as well as another Baytril injection. We were sent home with Tramadol and Metacam.

I'm so glad the vet on hand knew how to fix up a rat. I called and asked before bringing her in, and the receptionist asked the vet if she was comfortable treating a rat ( well, first she said she was pretty sure, but I made her actually ask the vet), but wasn't given specific details. When I brought Crass in she seemed to do everything right by RatShack standards (as far as I can tell), so that was lucky  .

I just wish it wasn't so damn expensive :wallbang: Just about $300 for everything, which brings the total since I first found the tumor up to almost $900 :panic: I'm so glad Dave (my ex-stepdad) has been there to pay for everything, because there's no way I could afford all this :cuddle:

The little lady is still groggy from the visit, and she's tucked into the front of my sweatshirt, inside her cube hammock (which went all the way to the vet with her because she wouldn't come out and I didn't want to reach in and grab her and hurt her more). And I gotta say, while the circumstances may suck, it is nice to get some calm cuddle time with my girl

Aww, poor girl. It sucks when these things happen and the costs add up. I'm glad your ex-stepdad is so supportive, I know mine wouldn't be.
