I just read through this whole thread, and I think it's awesome you didn't settle for the vets you weren't entirely comfortable with. I made a lot of phone calls to the local vets before I made my decision, and I'm so glad I got lucky on my first try! Sometimes it takes more than luck though, and your persistence certainly paid off!

Find things to do that will keep you busy but aren't vital you get completely right... remember to breathe, you will find you are breathing shallowly, and that brings up your stress...

Your baby sounds like she is in good hands, and we will all be thinking of you today. Ask when they think the surgery will be done, and if they say they are going to call you, you don't have to wait :cheeky: ...call for an update (clinics can get really busy so those calls can be pushed back).

I spent most of the day keeping busy, I tore apart my room cleaning, reorganized all my fabric, scrubbed down the closet with bleach (I hate mold), and even moved my bed so I could vacuum underneath it

So yeah, keeping busy.

I know that she'll probably be just fine, and the vet said that she's never lost a rat in surgery, but I'm still kinda antsy. I just want it to be done.

Thank you for the advice and the warm thoughts :hugs:

   Crass is home from surgery!!!

The vet said that everything went just fine and she should be totally recovered in about ten days :joy:

And here it is :sick2:
Tumor.jpg

I don't remember all the medical jargon, but basically the tumor was completely encapsulated except for a small part that seemed to be working it's way in somewhere else. We're getting the tumor tested, so I should know if it's dangerous cancer by Tuesday.

yay, so glad to hear it. I have been waiting for your post about how she is

Sorry, I meant to update sooner, I passed out as soon as I got home for dropping her off, and I slept through the phone call telling me that she was out of surgery and doing fine. I woke up after 3, and had to rush and clean crass's cage before my ride showed up at 4:30. That's what I get for staying up until 8am instead of waking up at 8am
And then I had to wait for the roomies to let me use their computer

But yeah, so glad that tumor is finally gone!

So far she seems pretty slow and sleepy, and seems a bit clumsy, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that's normal, she did get cut open in two places after all.

One question I have, how should I pick her up? I'm really nervous about picking her up around the middle because of where the incisions are, and I never trained her to just walk onto my hand.

Try to use your hands and scoop her up rather than grasp her around the middle. Did they send you home with metacam? They can be pretty dopey and quiet after surgery. This afternoon she should be more like herself :)

They didn't send me home with anything. I know that they gave her a "pain injection" after surgery, but I don't know what exactly it was.

Ugh, 2 incisions and no pain meds. :/ Can you pick up liquid infant Advil at the store? Give us a guesstimate on her weight? We can then give you a dose so she's more comfortable and won't pick and impede her healing.

I found the vet invoice, she weighs 423gm and she got Banamine and Baytril injections.

Banamine will wear off and she will likely need pain meds for a couple of days. I would pick up the Advil. It comes in tiny bottles and the fav is the grape flavoured, dye-free. Its good to keep on hand for emergencies like a sprained foot where you are trying to stop the swelling, etc.
