Can rats eat cheese?

Is small amounts of cheese ok for ratties as a treat? The other day someone told me it was bad for them but I've never heard this before.

My boys have been known to savor small hunks of cheddar :wink: I would imagine like any other treat, moderation is key. Although I thought I read someplace that rats are lactose intolerant (?)

Rats can't digest lactose. So cheese can actually cause stomach pains. Cheese is also very high fat and high protein.

Never give them bleu cheese. Never, ever. Bad stuff will happen.

I give mine cheddar or other quality cheeses in small amounts and probably less often than once a month. They don't even recognize American cheese as edible. I don't know why.

I think Rats can eat cheese, but I can't think they like Blue Cheese, I don't really like it so, maybe other people like it but I DO NOT!!!!!!!! :sad3:
But anyway!
I havn't hurd anything about rats disliking cheese my mouse Twinkle loves cheese ( only chedder though) but my old mouse Star, apsaloutly loved it, she ran away once in a room, and we used chedder cheese to tempt her back in my hands then in her cage.
It was quiet exsiting but yeah, and scaryyyy, about Star being lost and losing her forever :sad3:

so Jo, if rats can't digest lactose, does that mean they can't eat plain yogourt either? I give that to my rats and they seem fine but I won't give it to them anymore if its bad.

How much lactose in yogurt? That's what we would need to know. For example, my sister is allergic to lactose, not just lactose intolerant she can't drink milk and can't eat ice cream but she can have a bit of cheese and yogurt seem ok with her too.

I'm lactose intolerant. No cheese, icecream, yogurt, milk, it all bothers me now but it took a while. I used to have problems with cheese and ice cream and then all of a sudden I couldn't handle any of it.

I buy the boys soy yogurt..they LOVE it.

Goats milk is also quite high in fat so for those looking to add weight on their ratties, this would be ideal.

I love milk with my cereal!!!!!!!!!!

Specaily with Corn Flakes I've just had a brace in and I can really only eat Corn Flakes for Breakfast, (my mums asked me to eat something else though :sad3: I won't be able to handle it!!!!!!!!! I love Corn Flakes!!!!!!!!!)!

Well, when I have rats I'll be able to give them that ( yogot ( soya) and cheese)!!!!!! Yay( but only realy)!!!!!

I don't think mne would want it. They prefer fruits, nuts, and veggies.
