My Ina had the same thing. Vet said it was trauma to the eye and gave me antibiotic cream and another cream to keep the eye moist all the time.

And how did Ina do? She recovered? Did the eye look like it was smaller for awhile? I have the Tobrex (antibiotic opthalmic ointment).

thanks mamarat

Her eye did start to look better but I don't think she could see out of it. Unfortunately she died of something else before it could heal. But it was important to keep the eye moist at all times.

A mouse of mine grew a large tumour (or cyst?) right beneath her eye. We thought the eye would fall out actually as it ended up looking like that (in shape, not colour) but she made a 100% recovery. I was only 12 or 13 at the time so I can't quite recall what my dad did but there were daily injections and a LOT of ointment. I know that's little comfort since it's not the same health issue but I felt some positive similar story might be needed.

Worst case scenario...she loses an eye, right? She'll be okay with one eye and be just as gorgeous.

I don't know if that was helpful at all...I find looking at the worst case scenario and thinking about it sometimes makes thing easier. : P

:hugs:

Thats awful that it should take such a turn for the worse when it was looking so well! Best wishes and all my fingers crossed it gets better again. x

I'm still hoping for the best. That protrusion you see is eerily familiar of what my girl's eye looked like from the get-go. It could just be scabby material stuck there, or it could be Bella's eye getting rid of debri that found it's way into the wound when it was scratched. Like when a splinter is really deep and your body eventually pushes it out....

Just keep applying that ointment! The only really bad thing is if the eye starts to dry out. I've not heard anything bad about Tobrex. Although it wasn't what I used. I just cant remember the name of what I used... Sorry!

Thanks Tara and everyone else. :D I have no idea if its healing, but for some reason it looked better to me last night. :) Its like that was the turning of the corner before. It still looks ulcerated and the eye is smaller but the protrusion is less and no more "sticky out-y thingies". For the last 2 nights I have given her a very small dose of metacam since she seemed a little uncomfortable. I am actually going to be happy when she starts to bite on me again.

Her eye looks mostly normal now! I think the thingies were either scar tissue or something like that. Everything I read on eye injuries said the eye does weird stuff while trying to reestablish the proper fluid levels that keeps the eye looking normal. Since the cornea isn't such a solid thing and can expand/contract with those fluid levels, if she had any solid tissue in those spots it would have moved differently from the rest of the eye. It should maintain a mostly steady size for now, and should start filling in to look more normal.

Well I only have the 2 ointments here, and her eye never seems to get near drying out like poor Sebbie's eye (she is able to close it well), I'll just continue with what I have. I'll remember gel for next time. :)

I didn't mean for you to change her meds, it was just for info. The Ciloxan is antibiotic drops.

Ahh I have never heard of either of those, and I had never heard of gel for eyes as well...always good to learn new things. :)

I can see why gel is a good choice but they can wash it off pretty fast since it's likely not too comfortable. Probably depends on how tolerant the rat is. :)

For Beau I used a gel for his eye, though I have no idea how it worked as he always furiously washed his face after I let him go.

 Yeah, I usually had to distract mine with a REALLY yummy treat afterwards, just to get her to leave it alone for five seconds so the stuff could have a chance to soak in a bit. Usually yogurt or pudding. It also helped with her not hating Mommy's (my) guts every time I approached the cage with the eye ointment.

Bella ignores the ointment all together. Its her sister who wants to lick it off and Bella has to keep pushing her away.

I almost want to say it worries me a little that she doesn't fuss over it. I get a tiny uh-oh feeling. Hmmm... well, different rats, different temperaments. Who knows. Hows she today? Any better?
