Just got home from rescuing these two babies:

2 Rats Need Gone!! PRICE DROP

I have 2 rats, a brown male and a white with back female. I was told they were both females when I got them, turns out I got a little more than I asked for and unfortunately I don't have the time or knowledge to deal with them. They will come with everything they need (brand new cage, water dish, toys, etc.) including a large bag of Fresh 'N Comfy that was just opened. Serious inquiries only!!! Please reply through this add if interested I'm looking to get around $40.00 obo

She gave me them and their cage for $20. They've been seperated. One is in the single CN I got, and the other is in the cage that came with them.

They are both very little, I very much doubt the little girl is pregnant... but she'll be on preggo watch for the next little while.

I need name help!

Sorry for the bad photos... I snapped them on the car ride home.

They are beautiful! So glad they are getting a second chance with you and yes, as the others said, I am crossing my fingers she is not pregnant.

Name suggestions...hmmm!

1. Trixie and Bernard?

2. Lulu and Leo?

They are both just adorable <3
In time, I'm sure they will tell you their names :)

Hehe I think you're right. I woke up this morning to check on them and took the little girl out for a little while. She's so friendly and cute, I said to her "Aren't you just a little gem!". So I think we've found her name. Gem. :)

My fiances little brother asked that he name the boy. Of course I told him he could... and he decided on Mr. Ratburn  :help2: He was so happy about it that I told him it was a great name. But Joe and I are going to call him Burnie.

Part of me hates that they are separated right now. I know it's for their own good, but I cant help but feel sad for them. If Gem turns out to not be pregnant (how long should I wait to see?) I'm thinking on having Burnie neutered so they can be together again.

Thoughts?

From what I've read spaying is better and will help in keeping your girl from getting mammory tumors, but they are also more expensive then neuters. I only have boys and get them neutered when they cannot control their hormones and behave, but having one or the other done is a great idea so they can live together again.

You need to weigh here everyday and the same time while you are on prego watch, but if she is 5 weeks or younger I don't believe she should be prego, but of course that could be wrong.

Based on my experiences, I would say they are both older than 5 weeks for sure. Which makes me nervous. :disbelief:

Thanks for the info on spaying!

I would say they're at least 8 or 9 weeks. I have to pick up a scale so I can keep track of her weight.

Gem is a beautiful name for your girl! I love that! Also very original! And Burnie works wonderfully too! Sounds like "Bernie" of course. :) Great names!

Since I have no experience with pregnant females or knowing how soon they show, etc, I will leave the advice to the knowledgeable folks here on the forum who DO have great advice and experience with this, but I send you my best wishes that Gem is not pregnant. I know it must be so hard to keep her and Burnie separated right now, what a bummer, but soon they can hopefully be together soon if you decide you can have Gem spayed or Burnie neutered?
Spaying is nice for the females, as others have said, as it can cut down on the possibility of mammory tumors. Whatever you decide, keep us posted!

There is a good rat vet in Oakland which is near Mahoney Bay - Dr. Beverly Greenlaw. She has done quite a few spays on young girls for me. Her prices are very reasonable. If you got your girl in ASAP, she might be able to spay her before she's too far along.
The biggest advantage to having a spayed girl is that you can put them back together as soon as the little girl is healed up enough. You don't have to wait the three weeks like with the boys.
I know it's a bit of a drive, but the only alternative is to wait and possibly have to find homes for more babies.
One of the girls I took in a few years ago was in the cage with her brother when she was picked up. She ended up having ten babies.

That is great information Joanne thank you! I'm definitely going to look into getting her spayed. There's no obvious change in her size or anything so far. I keep forgetting to get a scale. My wedding is in three days and everything is hectic right now.

I will keep everyone posted.

So we took Gem (we've actually been calling her Peach) to the vet to see about an e spay. They told us she's definitely pregnant and it's too late for a spay. :( If its that close, how long do you think we have? I haven't been able to get her still enough to get accurate weights.

IF they can feel them, then it is very close. I would say the next few days. My girl didnt show on saturday when I picked her up, set up for a spay on friday and she was fullsized blown up, she had them that night. Get a baby safe cage ready that momma will pop soon :) and congrats on your wedding1:congrats!!:

I added pregnant to your thread to get new looks. I personally didnt look after the first rescue I suck I know but if they see she is pregnant some of the members who are good with babies can pop in.

No I haven't! We just got back into the swing of things after our wedding so I'll be trying to snap some photos of her later on today.

Thanks hopefloats!
