The Cost of Euthinasia

It is definitely worthwhile talking to the vet about this beforehand. the prices vary incredibly. The worst is taking an animal after midnight to be pts. Here I was actually grateful that the on-call vet (was a different clinic, and a vet who did not like rats... it was obvious) knew how to euthanize Corrie humanely, but the cost was over $200: an ER call-in fee, the exam fee, and the euthanasia.

The least expensive was a rat who needed very little gas. That cost less than $20 and was done by my own vet during daytime hours.

Someone told me that, back when she didn't have much money, and had a hamster that needed to be humanely pts, they used their car exhaust. I don't know whether that is humane or not. My vet says that the kindest and quickest way, if you have no access to a vet, is blunt trauma to the head. He realizes that it would be extremely difficult to do. I would have to be absolutely desperate.

I could never hit any animal over the head to kill it.
I have trouble enough with bugs ect.
It's my fault for not asking the price of having an animal PTS.
For everyone out there who wants to have ALOT of animals:
1. Marry a Vet.
2. Make sure you can afford it.

I don't smoke, drink or go out much I guess pets are my vice. :cheeky:

SONORA a week and a half ago. I miss you sweet girlie.

What beautiful pictures of your sweetie...

I'm very surprised at the blunt trauma to the head, I would have thought cervical dislocation.

I think cervical location has to be done right, whereas the other is ummm...a bigger target? :sick2:

Tough topic. Sharlees Rattakisses, don't think of it as your fault. These situations come up suddenly, and we can't always be prepared. That $200 euthanasia fee really took me by surprise, and I was lucky to have had the money.

The other problem is that it is not always possible to find an on-call service that knows how to euthanize a rat humanely. I get very nervous when I have a sick rat at the end of the week. At least twice I have made sure to have a very ill ratty pts on a Friday afternoon when I might have waited a day otherwise. It's not only the expense but the massive anxiety at not knowing whether a humane euthanasia will be available.

I know It's not my fault but I am still wondering if I did everything I could have.
Making a decision to have an animal PTS is a very difficult choice. :(
I appreciate all the feedback and support!!
