It is definitely worthwhile talking to the vet about this beforehand. the prices vary incredibly. The worst is taking an animal after midnight to be pts. Here I was actually grateful that the on-call vet (was a different clinic, and a vet who did not like rats... it was obvious) knew how to euthanize Corrie humanely, but the cost was over $200: an ER call-in fee, the exam fee, and the euthanasia.
The least expensive was a rat who needed very little gas. That cost less than $20 and was done by my own vet during daytime hours.
Someone told me that, back when she didn't have much money, and had a hamster that needed to be humanely pts, they used their car exhaust. I don't know whether that is humane or not. My vet says that the kindest and quickest way, if you have no access to a vet, is blunt trauma to the head. He realizes that it would be extremely difficult to do. I would have to be absolutely desperate.
