Tattooing rats?

I really doubt the pet shops and rescues there *all* know of this tattoo, do you really think rescues would think that is ethical if they are a good rescue? As I said before, if they end up in rescues, that's a lot of her fault for not fully checking the homes.... my friend runs a rescue and if anybody has ever had to give back rats (or any pet), they come straight back to the rescue.

As I said it's just like tattooing a baby... these rats are 5/6 weeks!

I agree. I too find it hard to believe that ALL the shelters and/or rescues (let alone pet stores) in the entire state know about her tattoo. And even *IF* they did, what about the rats that go out of state?

Ultimately the responsibility does come down to carefully screening homes AND keeping in touch. You can screen homes all you want, but if you don't keep in touch, does that show you really care? If you keep in touch, that's a constant reminder to the adopters that you DO care, and you ARE there if they should ever not be able to keep or not want (heaven forbid) their rats any more.

100% agree with you.

I don't even want to imagine how she restrains them to tattoo their ears themselves! Those poor babies! Marylou has told us that when they ear punch rats in the lab the ear is frozen first, but this is done at home not in a lab setting. :sad3:

I wondered about how it would be possible to inform everyone as well. Even then, how do you keep track of the free classifieds? If the rattery has had too many babies to keep track of, then that tells you something about where the rattery's priorities lie.
