Well , we are back :(
It is a mammary tumor , but luckily it is easily removable along with a spay to try and prevent more tumors later on. Other than that, she is one healthy rat! My problem , today's visit cost me almost half of the (what little left) of the emergency money I had. I lost my job a few months back and haven't been able to find another one since.I have been using any money i do get to pay for everyones food. The appointment set for tomorrow , is $425 . I only have $125. I don't know what to do. My sister is trying to raise money through pay pal on Face book called "save our Sophee" , no luck yet but I am praying. So , what does a person do when you need $300 in 24 hours?

I realise the health benefits of a spay but if you dont have the funds then she doesnt have to have a spay tomorrow and tbh she doesnt necessarily have to have the tumor removed right this second, it wont hurt to wait a bit while you get your funds in order.

The vet said that since she will be under we should do it. And , he gave me a MEGA discount on the spay. He said since she will be under already he would prefer to just do it and cut the cost of it more than half.

I think what she's getting at though is that you *could* wait a week or two, and make some more money in that time.

Yeah that's what I was trying to say...thanks for clarifying for me.

No problem.

Ewa, I'm sending thoughts your way, and good luck to your little girl!

Oh this is terrible I am so sorry I wish I could help :hugs: Which vet is it? Perhaps you could set up a payment plan with them? Do you have a credit card? Good luck sending good thoughts your way

:hugs:
I know exactly what you're going through -- I'm currently in a similar position with my dog. He's requiring expensive vet care that I can't afford and I'm SCRAMBLING to make ends meet so I can do it. So I really sympathize.

CareCredit is an option if you have good credit. They denied both me and my boyfriend though so I don't know what their requirements are, and realistically given your employment situation and speaking from experience if there is ANY way you can do this without putting yourself in debt, do it. It's way too hard to repair damaged credit by taking out a loan/credit card that you can't repay.

Definitely ask the vet if they have any payment programs, if you can work off part of the bill, etc.

And I concur with what Smilez said -- this may not need to be done TOMORROW if putting it off a few days can help you find the money. I'll tell you right now, although my dog is in need of veterinary help and it's a serious situation, it's not 100% urgent and unfortunately he HAS to wait an extra two weeks than I'd intended. That's the only way I could afford it. So I guess I'm just saying, don't feel terrible if you can't do this right now.

Are there any rescues in your area? They might be able to help, too, if not financially then maybe they know of other options/could get you a vet discount or something....

Thank you everyone for your words of advice and support.

You are all right , I could put it off , however , the vet is on vacation all next week so he wouldn't be able to do it until 2 weeks from now. I don't know how much the tumor will grow in that time. I called the vet anyhow and told them how much I raised and asked them if I could put that down as a payment and pay off the rest in the next couple weeks. I am hoping to hear back in a couple minutes...

fenshae - I am so sorry to hear about your dog! I think it is horrible that due to the economy animal owners and vets can't come to a better arrangement. I sincerely hope that you and your pup have a speedy recovery and live many more happy years together!

Even if it grows a bit, it will still likely be fine to operate on, and shouldn't threaten her life. Now, granted, I haven't seen pictures, but if you look up Shelagh's "Hayla", she's been waiting a couple weeks for surgery, and she goes in Monday. The tumor has grown a bit, yes, but she's still going to be 100% fine.

If it were me, I would wait a couple weeks and do it then, when you have the money.

Edit to add: viewtopic.php?p=223978#p223978 That's the thread with pictures of Hayla. you can see how large the tumor is, and that was posted on December 28th. It's grown, yes, but we're now over 3 weeks later and she's still fine, happy as a clam, and as I said, will be getting it removed Monday.

In all honesty I do want to wait. I just feel guilty letting her live like that. She is just any rat , she is my heart rat , my baby. I know I shouldn't feel guilty about having to wait but it just bugs me. I guess it is my only option though. I have not seen the thread about hayla , I need to check that out now. Sophees tumor is quite large though ...

Do you have a photo? If it's not bothering her, i don't see why you can't wait two more weeks.

I agree with Chelle. I've seen rats with tumors as large as their whole body who fought it out right to the end and had many happy months. You can probably afford a few weeks if that's what it takes to get the money.

Awhile back I had a girl with a tumor that I didn't get removed, for various reasons. Not a decision I would ever make again, but it was what I thought was best at the time. I noticed the tumor in September and I finally had to put her down in, like, May or June because the tumor ulcerated and became infected. Keep an eye on Sophee's tumor and see if there are any bald spots or sore spots on it where it looks inflamed. But realistically, I say get her in as soon as you can....without breaking yourself in the process.

And thank you for the kind words about my dog :) In his case it's a dental condition that he's had all his life that's just been steadily worsening, so I knew I could spare some time. I think he'll be OK in the long run!

There's really nothing to feel guilty about hun. If it's not bugging her, just wait. I found a small mammary tumor on one of my rats, Joyeux (so small you can't even see it yet... just slightly feel it beneath the skin). I'm waiting to have that operated on for another couple weeks, as all my funds this week went towards neuters and other tumor removals.

Well! Thank you to everyone once again! I had decided to wait when the vet called and said I could put the $125 as a down payment and pay the rest next week!! :happydance: AND it is only $325 now!! Sophee goes into surgery tomorrow and I will let you all know how it goes! The vet is super nice and I guess he didn't want to wait either since he is being so generous!
