I intend to ask her details about the Sendai Virus, as well as if there is any more localized testing areas for it (it may be faster and cheaper to discover if this is what we think it is).

Very cool! I am looking forward to hearing what she has to say about SV.

As for testing, I stand behind RADIL. They are responsible for testing research colonies all over the country and have been instrumental in developing new techniques for serological diagnostics in rodents. They also have spent a serious amount of time and money helping the pet rat community deal with and learn about the diseases we have out here.

It is possible for a rat to have Sendai and be asymptomatic. Sometimes the rat that brings in the virus does not even appear to be sick.
However they do not remain persistent carriers. They shed the virus just like a sick rat would and then it goes away.

I totally agree with you about RADIL, I'd still suggest getting it done there for a confirmation even if there was a possible testing lab closer to home. I'm just curious about if the information could get back to us even faster to give everyone a solid peace of mind (even if it IS Sendai, at least then we know it's not something new, right?).

Thank you SO much Bellaratta for shedding some more light on the situation! I know we all appreciate it greatly

You are welcome, I wish I had more info for you.

I just want you guys to remember that things like this happen. There has been really no reason for the people in this area to worry about viruses. Now, things have changed and it is going to take some patience and creative thinking to rescue safely. Even people getting new rats as pets need to find ways to quarantine safely. It can be done.

As hard as it may sound, people have to remember that their FIRST responsibility is to the rats they already have in their care. :kisskiss:

Thanks for this info Bella, it makes it a little easier for all of us.
Like I had said before I'm one of those people whose so paranoid that if people even think they have strep, I won't let them anywhere near they boys...

Shelagh, I'm very out-of-touch on the timelines of all that's been going on, or any of the details, since I tend to stay on the fringes of the forums. I knew you were having a rough time lately, but chalked it up to a sad but possibly normal-ish 'phase' when having such a large colony. Gosh, sweet lady, I had no idea it was this bad.

I don't know what else you might need, as far as supplies go (or even an ear or shoulder), but if there is any way I can help you get through this, please let me know. Between you, Jo, and Bella, y'all rock in the rattie world. I would not still be here if it weren't for you fine ladies.

Big hugs,
Robin

its looking more and more like i probably have SV in my house as well. here's a brief timeline

ghost "patient zero"-feb 12 rescued sick girl from pet store. brought home to dose for mites before sending her off to foster care. died a few days later

Romar found dead feb 18th. no previous health concerns. did not see signs of illness prior to death. necropsy showed pneumonia as the cause of death and inflamation in the intestines and abdomen. put my house and the foster house on tentative lockdown. called the pet store to find out where they get their rats as well, its mainly from missuagwa, ontario.

token taken seriously ill with open mouth breathing and not wanting to be handled feb 27th. put my house and the foster house on absolute lockdown to all rodents.

so i have a couple questions about SV that i would like some clarification on.

first, i know it takes 2 weeks for the virus to shed, but in that time while all rats are susceptible, not all rats necessarily catch it right at the same time right? meaning that as each rat catches it, its 2 weeks of contagion per rat?

also, ugh, there was an also but i've been up most the night watching token and reading all that i could over and over again and just being unwell... ugh... friggin! damnit i can't even think anymore...

2 weeks for each rat, which is why the lockdown is 60 days...so all rats can catch it, shed it and be immune. I am so sorry Twitch :sad3:

I find that incredibly odd that they would get their rats from Mississauga, ON! Does anyone know if we have a big ratmill here? That's probably where its originating. :emb:

Jeez...twitch that sucks.

I'm going to be keeping a ver close eye on my boys for the next month. I went to my vet on Friday and he told me he couldn't really cudddle my boy because he had just examined a rat with possible Sendai...although my boys has eye problems so of course he did have to handle him. And the vet washed his arms with Purell to get rid of anything I am very aware that Purell isn't anti-viral and he hadn't changed his clothes or anything so I'm a little on edge.

Edit: Just read SV can be rendered inavctive by alcohol. I'm still bothered but at least I know the Purell did something.

quick token update:

not sure if it means much but token is back in my shirt! :D yesterday he didn't want to have anything to do with me. didn't want to be handled at all. even this afternoon he was like that. and normally he's my big sook, first to drive down my shirt and get comfy on my "pillows". tonight he's back to shirt diving! he's still struggling to breathe, but he's down my shirt again and i choose to take that as a good sign even if its nothing.

Edit: Unfortunately few cases seem to be medically confirmed and few outbreaks are reported http://www.rmca.org/Data/
Is there another site that has more comprehensive information?

As far as I know the RMCA has the only viral database there is for pet rats. Nobody else has cared enough to take the time to try to deal with the issue of viral tracking.

Keep in mind that there is a lot more information that is not seen by the public which is in the submission report (you can click on a report form to see the questions)

Information about the medical aspects, test results, and treatments for each outbreak are shared with the Rat Guide team.

It is not a perfect system, nor a complete one. However, it is the only thing we have at this time. Also, the data base will not accept hearsay or unconfirmed reports and if more people would report their outbreaks it would be a lot better.
