like pictures or what?

.... i've never been bitten. even when taming and then became foster mum to little peatrie. i've only ever gotten exploration nibbles from my rats. like ''what's this, i think i'll nibble a little.''

I've never been bitten by my own, even when holding them down while vets do unspeakable things to them. like squishing pus out of an abscess, or sticking thermometers up their behind... :giggle: at most, they lick me 'aggressively'. other rats have tried to nibble me, but nothing serious; no wounds!

I have been bitten exactly twice, and do have a small scar on my finger from one.

The first time was Tequila, my roommate's rat. She was a ruby-eyed champagne-hooded girl from our skeazy PetCo. She had been alone in her cage for months because nobody wanted her for whatever reason, and she lived alone with us because we could never get her to take to my girl, Athena, who we'd planned to intro her with. Tequila was never one for socializing, and I think she had very poor eyesight. She was VERY grabby and assumed anything and everything that went into her cage was HERS. One day I put my hand in and she dove for me and grabbed hold of my finger and tried to tug it into her back corner. I think she thought it was a carrot. That one sliced open my finger pretty good and it did scar.

The second time I was bit was when my girl Velvet was nursing. She would NOT allow me to handle her when she was nursing and I reached into the cage for some reason or another and she nipped me very firmly to tell me to back OFF of her babies. I admitted that was my fault and we never had any problems.

what happened? why did you get bit, ratloveandcute?
I didn't know rat bites could be that vicious, looks downright painful!

he didn't 'mean' it - he wasn't aware of doing it basically. long story, but i think that's why when he bit, he bit hard and wouldn't let go. i had to open his mouth gently :(

In the pic, the dark patch is just dried blood, right?

If you can squeeze it together and the edges meet up, you can probably get it stitched. Or do the "liquid stitches" thing with crazy glue -- it really does work in a pinch.

But yeah. I'd clean it out with some hydrogen peroxide and keep a bandaid on it. Animal bites in general can get pretty nasty.

Ooooh - ouch big-time! I have a bitey boy although he is getting better. He has broken the skin and drawn blood 3 times now. This is despite our very gentle approach. I'm afraid to give him my fingers to sniff and lick - but I do pet him and I'm not worried about picking him up. That bite in the pic is nasty! My wounds were tiny in comparison.

The whole bit of black is sorta gaping, but it's got blood covering it, it clotted i think. some blood has gone now, but it was weeping pus or something earlier on. i can't use the hand at all, it's too painful. i don't know why but the day after he done it (it was actually early hours of friday), aka friday all day, i spent most of the day in bed and kept falling asleep. i've taken pain relief but i can't hold the finger up at all. :(

I've been bitten MANY times, lol
The worst case was my 'teaching' rat, Brillo... my lovely old Brillo. Who is now a heart rat, and VERY old....
He bit me once, hit the bone, and I had to go to the hospital. My finger bruised, and swelled to the point I could bend it. I was sent for xrays to make sure it wasn't broken, and they offered to stitch it, but I declined, lol.
I was put on abs, just incase. The doc himself had rats as pets, and I explained that I was taking in rescues, that this one had been neglected, and stoooopid me got in the middle of a rat fight...
If you're concerned, i'd suggest at the least a doc visit.

If there's pus and you're feeling icky I'd DEFINITELY recommend going to the doctor! There's always a chance you could get a blood infection and those are NOT something you want to deal with. On your hand now are there any red "trails" or marks going up your hand away from the bite, like in your skin?

Better safe than sorry when there's a possibility of infection!

You need to scrub that clean and have it looked at. Animal bites should not be stitched up, it allows bacteria to build (or so I was told when a rat tried to take my finger off) and could make an infection worse. Well bites that have innards hanging need stitched, but your run of the mill chomp should be allowed to heal from the inside out.

Holy Shebang -That's an owie! I've had 2 or 3 actual bites in 11 1/2 yrs, none of which needed any medical help - I do keep my tetanus shots up do date tho, have you done that?
I've suffered more from welts & itchy swollen eyes from allergies than from bites for sure.
