OK what do you use in your cage? Think of everything?
No fleece ever, so no fleece hammocks (broadcloth ones work well)

I use broadcloth hammocks, and sputniks with cotton stuffed inside for nakie warmth.
I use Vetbed Original in the base of their cage. I use an empty litter pan to encourage pooping in there.

I wipe the metal shelves (Rat Resorts) every day, and every 2nd day I remove the Vetbed and shake it out, remove the cotton in the sputniks and shake the crumbs out, and using a baby wipe, wipe out the bottom of the sputnik to get the rest of the crumbs. Then I wipe the base, and replace it all. At 6-7 days I remove the Vetbed and replace with clean (its machine washable).

:gaah: The last three times it was fleece stuck in her eye.
I haven't any choice but to have them in together.
Kinda makes me want to kick myself for selling the 3rd level add on. :emb:
I will ask about the broad cloth.
Thanks for all your help Shelagh. :cuddle:

We got it at fabricland, it wasn't cheap. I'd recommend going to thrift shops and buying up nurse scrubs, it's the same thing.

Another trip to Dr. Munn today.
Olive had a massive amount of debris in her eye. :gaah:
Kenny and Clemmie have to be moved to another cage which leaves me no choice but to split half of the C.N.
I will alternate all the groups so each has a turn in the bigger half.
Thanx for the heads up on the broadcloth Jo.
I will have to buy used scrubs as it is way cheaper than buying broadcloth and as for sewing?
I sewed my shirt to a shirt I was "trying" to sew in grade 11 Home Ec. and sadly I am no better at sewing than I was in 1983.
I sure hope that Olive doesn't have the need of Dr. Munn anytime soon.
Getting her eye cleaned out today cost me $119.00, bringing very close to the end of the money I had saved for vet issues.
I am so stressed at the moment that one more thing just might send me happily to a padded room.

I had a feeling you would have to house the nakies separately. :sad3:

buying new scrubs at walmart or a Giant Tiger if you can find it is pretty cheap as well. Get the pants, cut them and you have almost ready made double deckers or tubes...

I am about ready to :gaah:
I have been doing all I can for Olive and her stoopid #!!#* eye.
She still is getting stuff in it. :wallbang:
I can't afford $120.00 twice a month.
As it is I'm going to have to borrow it and my husband isn't pleased.
Randy Butternubs has had no issues but Olive? :thud:
Nubbies does have face fuzz do you think his hair is getting in Olive's eye?

I need some help.
Despite using the right cloth, no litter, cardboard and cleaning the cage every other day,
Olives eye issues persist. :gaah:
One of the techs at Dr. Munn's today said that I need to house Olive in a plastic enclosed cage.
With little bars at the top for air. :badidea:
I don't think she knows much if anything about ratties.
With 6 cats, 17 rats a hammie and a dobermann there is so much hair and fur floating around.
There is no way to keep the fur out of her eye.
The only way I can stop her eye problems is to get her other eye removed, put her in a tank or find a new home for her. :sad3:
To be honest with you I wish I had zero rats.
I am not finding any pleasure with having rats, just stress and tonnes of work.
I don't know what to do and the stress is overwhelming.
I would appreciate any advice or ideas.

Have you asked Dr Munn if you should remove that other eye?

Do you have an air purifier? They do a lot to remove fur from the air, just make sure you are changing/cleaning the filters when you should be.

I had thought of an air purifier but I haven't the money.
I wonder if anyone else here has had this problem?
Anyone want a slightly used Olive?

Have you looked on CL and kijiji? I've seen some good ones on sale for $30-$50.

You can also try changing your furnace filter (which you should be doing anyway) and running the fan setting all the time. This should help filter out some of the fur, but may backfire if it's been a long time since you cleaned your vents.

We change the furnace filter regularly and run the fan. I will look for posts online.
I didn't think of looking at CL or Kijiji. :emb:
I just finished cleaning the cages and as usual the ratties worked there magic.
Loveable, sweet, happy ratties really cheer me up.

I would talk to Dr Munn seriously about surgical removal of her remaining eye. I was going to do it with Melvin but I think we are out of the woods now. Then all your rats can live together again. The cost of the surgery would be less than a lifetime of Olive visits to the vet since she's going soooo often now :(

PM me hun?

Ohhh fantastic...it was the only decision you could make in this situation. :joy:

For the donators, I am going to Dr Munn's on Friday for 2 surgeries, so I am going to put the money on Shar's account :)

I'm glad that she will finally get her enucleation. I'm sure she will be happy not to have a sore and stinky eye. Whiskers help a lot - does she have any? And smell and hearing... I'm sure she'll be fine. I hope she does will with her surgery! We'll all be thinking about her.

Olive has crazy whiskers.
They curl and whorl every which way.
I have my doubts that they will help her any.
No worries for little Miss bossy boots though as she will still rule the cage. :heart
Thanx to wonderful Rat Shacker Olives eye issues will be a thing of the past. :cuddle:
