I do know that being combative after a seizure is totally normal, it can take a while to clear up, so you are probably right. It can make you utterly confused or come out punching LOL my epilepsy runs in my family.

I think there's something to do with the brain chemisty needing to level out after the seizure. Sooooo happy he's come back to being his normal self. When it comes to enucleation, you know we'll all pitch in a bit to help out. This is a crappy time of year to be considering the cost of a major surgery!!

that is why you see in the papers an epileptic was tazed by the police. they come out combative and confused.. police think they are drunk, and they get tazed. It is all the same people and animals, the effects anyway. I am just glad he is coping, I have found that they really adapt fast. He reminds me of my toby, so i love seeing his picture in your avatar. He has moved into my heart like unreal.

Eli and I are resting tonight...

then I joined him and he crawled under the blankets and lay over my foot while I watched TV

This morning.. no extra swelling (my worry), although he's HELL to medicate.

I am re-intro'g him to Leo and Zeus as we speak now that the crucial time is over. :joy:

I'll be curious to know how Eli does when he's reintroduced. If he'll just act normally, or feel threatened because he can't see. I think we humans rely much more on sight than most animals.

Good luck with eli! Hopefully it does go smooth, as joanne said i agree, hopefully he don't feel threat...

Already re-intro'd, and he made sure that they knew he was still boss. LOL He followed them around, he didn't avoid them. They are all sleeping in their cage right now. :D

That is good! he is a total trooper, good thing he likes to be boss that helps him i am sure. So what will they do now? just watch the eye and remove it if it becomes problem?

Yep that's what we'll do. I watch for any swelling or possible infection/involvement that could endanger him. Eyes swell up fast though...Teppy's was toast in 2-3 days from glaucoma. I have 2 one-eyed rats here :)

wow. It makes it seem like a more frequent thing with you saying that LOL... Now i want to check all my rats eyes over LOL

I have a cat who has one eye, well he is blind in his eye, He is something else, it affects his jumping, so you always hear him sliding down stuff where he missed his jump. So far we have been lucky he can keep his eye and it as been about 8 years since he lost his eyesight in it. He never quit adjusted jumping wise, lol hopefully rats adjust faster than he did.

Aw, what sweet pictures of him sleeping!

I'm so sorry that this happened, Shelagh - I can only imagine how terrifying it must have been to see that!! BUT at the same time I'm greatly relieved that it isn't going to cost him more than an eye... as terrible as it is, and he's likely totally blind by now, right? he can, I think, learn through it.

Regarding the tazering... wouldn't it be worse to taze an epileptic? I mean the neurons in their brain are firing like crazy, can't imagine adding a jolt of pure electricity would help matters...

he may not be missing his jumps because of his eyes, I've got a couple of cats with perfectly good vision that often miss when they go to jump up on something
and I had a completely blind cat who could get up onto anything he wanted to, seemingly effortlessly! he was amazing!

cats (and rats too) do not rely that much on their vision, so losing their sight is not nearly as traumatic to them as it can be for people. (of course it's not at all traumatic if you are BORN blind, you don't know anything else)

there was just a discussion about rat's sight the other day I think and I got this link from it:

http://www.ratbehavior.org/perception.htm

it shows what rats can/can't see and how they use other senses like touch and scent and hearing a lot more, to help them navigate.
