Gestation is usually 21 to 23 days but some can go longer if they have been bred back to back. She should be popping very soon.
She looks like she's about to pop (quite round) but she hasn't pulled off the hair around her nipples very much and neither is she spotting much. You said it might be longer if they bred back to back-how much longer? If you don't know a definite number, that's fine. I just worry too much, probably.

Rats don't pull hair, not most anyways, same with the spotting, it doesn't always happen. I'd probably wait another day or so then rush her in to the vet, just in case.

I thought you has Kaiser since February? If that's the case then unless she just had a litter in the last month this isn't a back to back litter so you don't have to worry about that.

Was she bred back-to-back? Gestation for back-to-back litters can be 28 days.
Okay, that makes me feel better. I'm not certain that it was back-to-back, but she is taking longer than 21 days. It is still possible she could have her litter today or the next two days, but knowing that it could take longer if it was a back-to-back breeding then I feel fine about her health.

I don't know. I haven't really had time to research the subject besides a little on here (and I'm still learning how to navigate here) so I'm going mostly off of what my mother has read. As far as I know we don't have a vet that does rats. I mean, once my vet helped me with my rat Koichirou, but that was only a cyst that he removed. It wasn't anything specific to his animal classification.
Anyways, like xxchelle said it may go up to 28 days.

I have had Kaiser since February, but I got Brazil (a male) on the 11th, allowed them to meet briefly on the 12th, so she should be giving birth sometime this week.

It should only go up to 28 days if it's a back-to-back litter which like I said unless she has given birth in the last month it isn't. So unless you are confused on the dates when your male and female met then you should look into taking her to the vet if she doesn't pop soon.

You're confused, the meaning of back-to-back means when a rat gets pregnant right after giving birth. If you've had her since February and she hasn't had a litter then it's not a back-to-back breeding.

OH!.... I was. Thank you. I wasn't really thinking too much on the wording. I was thinking more towards if Brazil got her pregnant by getting on her back... Then she should be giving birth within the next three days (including today). Thank you for clearing that up, Moon.

And like I said smilez_n_hugs, I don't have a vet that really knows anything about rats, but if she doesn't give birth soon, I will see what my vet can do, if he can do anything.

I know people are weary about mentioning their location but maybe if you could mention an area then we could help you find a rat knowledgeable vet.

For the sake of Kaiser I'd recommend calling around to some more vets now. If a big emergency comes up you are going to need to find somewhere that's comfortable seeing her, even if it means a longer than usual trek getting there.

:laugh4: :laugh4: :laugh4: ..."by getting on her back..." Oh my gosh.....too funny! Thank you for that laugh!!!

I have just read through this thread... good for you, "CookiesAndCream" for holding your own on this forum! It's def. NOT an easy thing to do when you're being judged, etc... I think you've answered all questions very well, and politely, considering... I'm in my 30's, and still learning to "slow down and breathe/think for a minute" when I feel judged, etc...

As for the rattie situation... not a good one, but at least you're on here looking for good advice. That is a good step. Wishing you all the best...

How specific do you need? I mean, I understand what you mean and everything, and I know it would probably help a lot to be more specific. I just don't want to be too specific what I say too much. For starters I guess I could say I live in Indiana, US.

That's very true and I will do that.

I guess my mind's too far in the gutter... I grew up with too many perverted people. XD
Please, call me Cookie. I've been using forums since I was around 12, maybe even younger so I know that getting upset at others and using harsh language isn't very mature and will only lead to negative opinions and/or consequences. I've also held down my own forum a while back so, not to say I'm all knowing and the best behaved person on a forum, but I know how to handle judgment, as you put it. Also, on the internet, you can't tell the tone or the expression someone is using when they say what they do-it's normally best to take what people say as politely as you can-Unless you can definitely tell they're being, well, you're 30(-ish), so you know. XD
In person or if I know a person and they tend to judge harshly/rudely, then I normally don't do so well.

"Come what may". It may not be the best situation, but I'm going to make the best of it as I can. Thank you for your kind wishes. I will pass them on to Kaiser (and Brazil-Not that he's probably aware of what's going on).

Since most of our members are Canadian it might help you to look through the vet recommendations on Goosemoose http://www.goosemoose.com/component/opt ... adid,19879

I hope you are able to find a good vet.
I've actually noticed that, and I must say I'm a bit jealous of you Canadians. I'd live there sooner than I'd live here... But I can't move yet.
We do have an "exotic" vet near my older brother's old school so it isn't too far. I don't know how good they are though.

Not only do rats need to be housed with at least one other same sex rat, but babies need at least one other baby to play with.
Never let a baby go without one or two same sex siblings.

Bedding for babies should not have threads as threads may get wrapped around little limbs or necks.

Sorry for getting back to you all so late but Kaiser did give birth last week... Or at least one was born alive, the rest were still births. Kaiser must have stepped on the live one by accident and killed it as well. She's been slightly depressed lately, lying around in her cage not wanting to do much except eat.

Please, no one mention anything to the effect that this was the best thing that could have happened. It's not and I don't want to hear it. It will only upset/anger me, so please don't push me to that.

If anyone could give me some advice on how to cheer her up, that would be helpful. I've gotten her some special (but healthy) snacks and that's helped a little, but I want her up and active again. Not to say I don't understand why she would be depressed.

For an entire litter to be stillborn, there's something drastically wrong. Was she in labor for long? My rescue girl Beta's contractions stopped and she needed to be rushed to a vet, and even then most of the babies didn't make it because they didn't come out in time.

For her to still be lethargic, I'm very worried that something is still inside of her, whether it's more stillborn babies, or a placenta, or who knows what... She NEEDS a vet right away. SQ had a girl with dead pups inside of her, and had she not have gotten her spayed right away, her girl would have went into shock and died.

Also, I've never heard of a mom stepping on a baby and killing it. Another rescue litter I had here, Trapper, she would literally trample the babies and they'd all just squeak away. I have pictures of her standing on top of them, and nothing happened to them even so much as a scratch.

I hope you see now why it's so important not to breed rats of unknown health/genetics. I'm sorry for the losses, and I hope your girl will be okay.

OMG, I'm so sorry for Kaiser & you. I hope you are able to comfort each other over this grief.
Are you able to get her to a vet and have her ok'd? It's a small charge in relation to a big life.
