I never had the chance to read this thread before, and it is really exciting news. I usually spay my girls, but I've had some die of PT (the ones who got spayed after a late adoption usually). currently I have two girls whose age was unknown, anywhere from 1 to 2 years when I got them. So I was not planning to spay them. It is comforting to know that there may be hope if they get mammary tumours or PT.

Update: Issa stopped taking all her meds for 2 days so I had to create an oral solution, her PT symptoms returned..not completely but much more noticeable than before. This morning was her first full proper dose again, so we'll have to see how she does. Still bright, still happy, just the inability to grasp at this time.

Back in early January, Nicole adopted a little girl from our OSPCA. I could tell Maya had a PT so we scrambled and got her on the Bromocriptine as well as Baytril and Clavamox in case of inner ear infection. Sadly, I believe we started too late. After 2 weeks of Bromocriptine, Maya continued to deteriorate to the point where she needed to be put to sleep. A necropsy revealed a big pituitary tumour as well as a huge uterine tumour. We believe the uterine tumour forced Maya to walk that funny splayed walk.

Hopefully we'll get better results with our next PT case... we'll try and catch it early enough.

I hope Issa bounces back!!! She's lucky she's got this much more.

Sadly Isabella is now in full blown PT.

I took pics (below) of her trying to eat a yogie (she refused the cheerio) for my vet.

Called the clinic to ask for advice, but found out Dr. Munn is gone til next week. :undecided:

I wanted to know if I could treat her with dexamethasone, or if that would taint the study and I had to watch her go through it until she was pts and necropsied.

I do remember that Dr Munn said I could keep her on dex if I wanted, but I am not sure why we didn't. So I decided to start dex tonight, and if it ruins the study, c'est la vie.

poor Issa is wading through her food with her chin now...

Once she fell over she pinned that yogie down and started chewing. My poor chubby lady. If the bromocriptine isn't able to help anymore, at least it gave her a good almost 2 months extra! or maybe like a bad URI needs the addition of the steroid now. We should know by tomorrow night after she gets her dex tonight.

Definitely go with the dex. Formal scientific studies do kind of require people to be completely unattached to the animal... something that is utterly impossible for us rat-lovers.

Give her dex, Shelagh. The study will still give a good indication of how the Brom works.

Poor sweet Isabella! I think that the Bromocriptine has proven itself already, and I am glad that you are giving the dex. Let's hope that she has some more time left. She is nothing if not determined.

The dex helped a little in the beginning but not a lot...she stabilized but was somewhat wobbly and was unable to eat foods well, but over the last couple of days she's really improved. MUCH more agile and bouncy. She runs, she bounces, she climbs wobbily up my leg when I am at the computer. She has started escaping from her cage again.... :cheeky:

I had the Angels out and Kelly is not fond of Isabella...and who do I see running on the floor...again? Yep, Issa.

I got some pics to show her alertness...she runs with her tail held up at all times.

eating some yogie, not perfect since she rested it, but pretty even :)

then off she bounces

I put her back in her cage so she and Kelly don't run into each other, and reach for the mesh panels to cover her cage...
turn around and she's trying again!!!

Oh c'mon, why can't I come out??

Such happy news! :joy: She looks so wonderful. I have mentioned the results to my vet, who is interested to hear more. It will be nice to have something to try the next time PT hits my gang.

I have just read this for the first time (thought it was about a guinea pig!!! LOL)
Interesting progress. I wonder if the Bromocriptine + dex would give the best results? She certainly seems to need the steroid - the pictures a week apart of her trying to hold a treat are totally different.
