First thing this morning I ran out and got a couple of bottles of infant ibuprofin. I dosed Aurora up and called the Vet, they told me to bring her straight in. She's there now, they told me to give them a call around one if they don't call me before then, they've gotta put her under, clean her up, and resuture the wound. I was up most of the night with her so I'm pretty tired, but relieved this is being taken care of. I'll be off to the First Aid thread now, so I can piece together an emergency kit just incase anything like this ever happens again.

Its good stuff to have on hand just in case...injuries like to happen at night when nothing is open :p

Poor little Aurora!

I don't understand vets sometimes!

Are they braindead? Do they honestly believe that a living thing would not feel PAIN after surgery??? :redhot:

Sorry, but these kinds of things just blow my mind!

I never had this kind of issue with my vets. My rats were always sent home with enough pain meds to service a small rat army and I never had to ask them for it! It was a given.

These people need to wake up. It is common sense that any living thing will feel pain and need medications for it.

They could have spared you and Aurora the additional upset and sleepless night. ((((((((((Kat))))))))))

Glue is perfectly acceptable for most surgeries rats have and I have yet to have one mess with it. We have a no external stitch rule with my vet because the ones that did have them removed them. I would let them know not to use stitches. every tumor removal we have had we had them glued.

I would let your vet know that she/he could use glue. My vet sounded shocked that rats are less likely to mess with glue. He doesnt use stitches on them anymore.

So Aurora's home. I just went and picked her up. They did use Glue this time, and right now I have her out in the playpen with the other girls, and some good food and soft blankets so they can relax, rest, and play.

Unfortunately still no pain meds. They insisted that she didn't need them.. but they also told me that Ibuprofin is slightly toxic for rats? They said they gave her some fluids under the skin to help flush the ibuprofin out, because apparently it can damage liver/kidneys? Have any of you heard of this before?

It does that for humans too, at large doses, same with tylenol. Any medication after over use would eventually damage the body.......

Did they give her any pain meds there? They usually give a metacam injection that holds them for up to 24 hours...if they did so, then no don't give her anything. That injection is why she was fine for the first while then once it wore off she felt the pain...

No, they didn't give her anything besides fluids. They didn't even give her anesthesia, just glued her back up. It's been about four hours.. I think I'm gonna wait an hour or two before giving her more just incase, unless she starts picking again. Thank all of you guys so much for the advice and support, it's been quite the stressful few hours.

You would think they would realize that she opened herself up the first time due to pain, BUT she doesn't feel any pain and must just be a picker...WTH??? Looks like you will have to keep ibu on hand all the time due to this vet. Ibu is an NSAID like metacam but its not as good or as safe. But its not toxic either...unless you decide to OD on it or use it a long time...not one small dose! Grrrr.

Small town vets, I guess that's what goes down. Atleast I have the Ibu now, and was smart enough to stock up after not being able to come across ANY last night. Hopefully since it's a reasonably small incision and it's glued shut now I won't have any more issues.. There isn't any way for me to get Metacam other than prescription, right?

No.

Do you know of anywhere I could get it offline?

Are there any exotic animal vets somewhere else in New York who you could get to for the Metacam?

Considering the history, another vet might be willing to prescribe it to you.

I can't believe your vet is being so stubborn. Are they dog/cat vets or do they specialize in exotics? Unless the vet is an exotic animal specialist they won't have much knowledge of the little ones. Sucks, but there it is. :(
