Baytril dosage from the Rat Health Care book by Debbie Ducommun is:
10 mg/lb = 0.022 mg/g

Dosage:
0.022mg/g x 537g = 11.814 mg of drug for your rat

Amount to give: (assuming your drug concentration is 25 mg/ml)
25 mg/1 ml = 11.814 mg/ x ml

Solve for x: (cross multiply)
25 x = 11.814
x = 0.47 ml of drug

Can you follow that? I KNEW algebra would be practical!!!!!!
I hope this helps!

Grurder used to make these sounds her whole life. It was usually when we'd approach the cage, or she would get a shoulder ride or treat, etc.
She started at about 4 months with this kind of thing, and it never proved to be anything more than excitement. She was just a 'talker'.
Don't know if this is the same for your lady, that's just my experience with these noises.

Rats don't talk. If Grurder made those sounds her whole life it means she was somewhat congested that whole time. I agree that you should see if there's something irritating her breathing and see if it will go away on its own, otherwise take her to the vet to get abs if she keeps making them. If you can, steaming her may help her feel better in the meantime.
I just figured it was her 'thing' kind of. Her sister Eloise never did it, and they spent their entire lives together. Grurder would always make little snuffles and peeps, but there were never any abnormal sounds in her lungs or anything, and even then, it wasn't a constant thing, only when she was really happy to be getting attention or treats. I even asked my vet when I took her in, and he said he could find nothing wrong with her and that if she'd been doing it for so long it may just have been her.
I really hope she wasn't uncomfortable, that would be a huge bummer. :(

Hmm I have always dosed at 10mg/kg (it's what our vet recommends) so it would only be .22mL.

I agree. 10mg/lb seems WAY too high. As per the Rat Guide (http://ratguide.com/meds/antimicrobial_ ... aytril.php), I am seeing a range of doses anywhere from 2.5mg/kg to 10mg/kg every 12 hours. But, I also found this there:
Per Rat Health Care by Debbie Ducommun:”Best reserved for older animals and more severe infection”, Baytril 10mg/lb (20 mg/kg) , PO or SQ , BID

Judging by all this, 10mg/lb is far too high for what you are dealing with. I would go with 5-10mg/kg, as I have experience with. So, 0.11-0.22mL every 12 hours.

Mine is diluted from 50 mg/ml to 25 mg/ml ..so yes it is 25 mg/ml.

So Smilez, I should start with 0.22 twice a day? for 4 weeks? 6 weeks?

I won't start unless she is still like it tomorrow.

I would give .22 twice a day and then judge how long to give it by how fast she improves. Also depending on how fast she improves you might end up needing to add doxy but from what you have described I don't think she needs it right now.

k. How will I know if she needs it, any other symptoms?

My Bijoux has made sounds like this since I got her when she was about 6 or 7-ish weeks old. She only makes sounds like this when she is sniffing enthusiastically like your girl did before. Bijoux was on antibiotics for a bit and it didn't help these noises so I'm assuming it is an allergy to something since her breathing is normal.
Is there a way to give rats antihistamines?

I have a lot more doxy here, than I do baytril (however I can try to get more baytril) ..could I start her on just doxy?

I made an apt for Hannah for Tuesday, with the other vet :gaah:

I only have enough Baytril till then, so hopefully he agrees with me that she needs it and gives me more.

I can't even imagine being without a good vet, hopefully yours will return soon. Good luck with the "other" vet.

You don't want to imagine, it's a nightmear ..I get up everyday praying that when I go to the cage, no one is sick. It will be another month or more before my vet returns :panic:

This other vet, is experienced with rats, but is not up to date on them, and is not open to any suggestions. My vet is as good as he is now, because he listens to suggestions and learns with me!
