Didn't go to Oshawa, nobody in Oshawa seems to deal with rodents. Was referred from our normal vet for our cat at Simcoe North to the Clarington Animal Clinic. Definately would recommend it. The vet was a rat owner himself, was very informative (which is important to us as these ratties are our first), and the price was amazing. Doc visit + meds was 70 bucks.

If you're familiar with Courtice, they're right at the intersection of King (HWY2) and Courtice Rd.

Yeah not a big fan of that one. Not sure why but the vet rubbed me the wrong way. I usually go to callbeck animal hospital on rossland and thornton. They are really nice there, but way over charge for surgeries and stuff. Very good for visits when you just need meds though. Last time I think it was 80 dollars for 9 rats and two tubes of revo.

This is actually Brent's wife speaking.

****er is doing so much better I actually can't believe it. Yesterday the wheazing had stopped by the time we went to bed, and this morning he actually looked energetic. He was the first one to the cage door (which is helpful since I needed to give him meds). He is still producing the red stuff around his eyes and nose, but he is actually keeping it cleaned away, we don't have to do it for him. And he actually was interested in food today (and by interested I mean he grabbed the piece of carrot out of my hand and ran away with it to keep his brothers from eating it. )

We put a humidifier next to the cage, and now he sleeps right next to - instead of in the basket- so I think that alone is making a big difference for him. The problem is trying to get him to take his meds. He KNOWS what i'm doing, and yesterday he turned his nose up at peanut butter that had meds in them, and egg nog laced with meds. So I don't know if that was lack of interest in food, or becasue there was baytril in it. I know they LOVE peanut butter. I am a little concerned that forcing him to take the meds with the syringe is stressing him out, but he needs to keep taking them regardless.

We are so happy that he is doing better! I really think that if we had waited another day to take him to the vet he would have died over night. :(

Hopefully he will continue to get better!

Amanda

what colour is the baytril?
It might not have the yummy syrup flavour...

You could try to put it on a small piece of bread, or serve him his meds on a spoon with strawberry ensure, like a tsp with his meds on it and add a teeny bit of ensure to it...

There's a thread, i'll find it and post the link for you guys, it's all about masking meds for the stubbourn!

I have one of my ratties on Baytril right now, and it is awful tasting. We seem to be able to only get the injectable stuff here, but they take it orally. Still works, go figure... I mix it into a spoonful of yogurt. Since they love yogurt, they will happily eat the whole spoonful.

i can't believe the difference in just those two pictures. it's a good thing that you took him asap. poor little guy. glad to hear things are getting better though! hopefully things stay on that road.

It's so great that it's a relatively easy fix. Make sure he is on the meds for at least 4 to 6 weeks. If he goes off them too soon, the bacteria will rebound and be resistant next round.

We just had a big scare tonight and I don't know what to do as the vets are closed... It almost looked like he had a seizure. He was very disoriented afterwards, falling around and flailing. He settled down, but he doesn't appear to be able to see. He's walking around the same corners of the cage, he can't find food or his water, and when we put our hands out for him to sniff as he normally does, he bit. ****er has never bitten before. Also, he can't seem to focus on anything.. he perks up at noise, but normally when you move your hands about the rats follow it, but he's just sitting there now.

Could this have been a stroke? Is my ****er blind?

We've left a message with the vet to call us ASAP, but being the holidays, we don't know when they're going to be in... any suggestions anyone?
