Hello everyone!

I noticed this morning that Obi had a bit of his tail degloved, I’ve been washing it in a salt water solution and the redness seems to have gone down. Can’t take him to the vets until next weekend, he doesn’t seem in pain or uncomfortable whatsoever and has the same playful attitude towards his brothers.

Should I carry on just washing the wound? I don’t have any antiseptic gel so can’t use that. Any tips on how to help it heal? I have Himalayan salt if I could use that somehow, apparently it has healing properties??

Here is some information on how to care for a rat with a degloved tail from a vet approved medical site for rat owners. The tip will probably, eventually break off.

and here are the signs of pain in rats as you may need to provide pain meds http://ratguide.com/health/basics/signs_of_pain_in_rats.php

Thank you for the links xx

Will carry on cleaning with salt for now and keep an eye on it. Might pop out to get some bepanthol tomorrow.

Oddly enough, I remember a few of mine having the ends poke out like that. I just left them alone and watched for any sign of pain. They really didn't seem to notice. Weird!

I too had a few elderly rats whose tails went like that when they were elderly and like Jorats reported above, it did not seem to bother them and the ends eventually broke off
