I also want to add that using two antibiotics in combination is much less likely to lead to antibiotic resistance. If you wait to treat respiratory symptoms too long though, it could lead to permanent damage that can not be resolved as easily if at all with antibiotics.

This is a good point. Baytil alone is ok for the mildest infections but if both are available, it's definitely preferred. If YOU can hear wheezing, then you're at the point where a second ab is needed

Thanks for all of the information guys. I wasn't able to get Neon in today, but I have an appointment at 2:30 tomorrow. I'll keep all of your suggestions in mind, and see what their recommendation is. If I don't feel comfortable with the diagnosis/prescription, I'll certainly say something, but I don't feel it will be an issue.

As to the porphyrin buildup, what makes you think it will never go away? It's not normal for a rat to have excess porphyrin. As you know it can be caused by stress, or illness. If she is having breathing issues, it is likely from that, and treating the infection will take care of it.

For home remedies, the only real home treatment is echinacea, but it does not replace antibiotics. It helps their immune system, but will not fight infection.
She's had a broken nose that didn't set entirely right when it healed. I think there may be slight pressure on her sinuses causing a mild discomfort, and hence the poryph.
How exactly would I go about giving rats echinacea?

Ah, okay. I really have no idea what could be done for that, other than pain/anti-inflammatory medication?, but maybe someone else will have an idea. For the use of echinacea though, the only dosage info I've seen says to get the childrens alcohol free liquid, and give one to two drops daily for one week, then take two to three weeks off, then repeat. It is never meant to be lifelong though, so I'd really only do so many cycles of it at a time.
