Oh my, she looks so skinny now...
We've had rats with pus that thick too, good that your vet found a way to allow it to drain but the thickness of it might not allow it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she will do a full recovery and if not, at least give you a few good months.

Wow, poor Tonka! Any idea how an abscess developed like that, deep inside her? Is it possible it was from draining a cyst before?

A marsupialization procedure was done on a guinea pig I knew to create an alternate opening to drain his bladder after a stone became lodged in his urethra - it's apparently a more common type of procedure for ferrets and cats, first time it's been done on a gp. Absolutely fascinating.

Although I hate the idea of experimenting on our pets, there always needs to be a first time for everything so that we can learn from the experience. This is similar to what they're doing with that guinea pig we both know Shelagh, owned by one of my fosters, so Dr. Munn has a bit of experience with it. I'm so glad that Dr. Munn came up with this idea for Tonka - I hope she pulls through and ends up doing well!

I guess flushing isn't an option given the location and depth of the abscess?

Oh my gosh...

I was holding my breath through the whole of your update post, Shelagh!

I'm AMAZED at the job Dr. Munn was able to do!

Sending much love and many prayers to Tonka for a speedy and pain-free recovery - I bet she'll be glad to be free of the weight!

We discussed flushing and decided against it for just those reasons. Its one thing to have a regular abscess burst, another to try to press and express the fluid you just put in around a surgical site.

She just took both her meds like the champ she is. I think we are all off to bed now....so tired.

I decided that even if Tonks doesn't make it, I will get Dr Munn to do a necro on her and see if we can learn anything to help other little critters in the future. :sad3:

how's Tonks today hun?

She got .1 cc's of metacam at 6:30 am this morning. I decided I had better stay on top of any pain rather than play catchup.

She was good about her meds last night (metronidazole with a zithro "chaser") and this morning, I gave her the metro and then offered her breakfast at about 8:00 am. She ate methodically but not a lot, then toddled off to rest again. I have to keep reminding myself that she finished her surgery a LOT later than normal, and she was under a long time. I am hoping by mid-afternoon she is a little less groggy and more "normal after surgery".

The incision edges look a bit puffy but that could be normal post-surgery swelling, there was so much trauma to the tissues.

She IS eating some mewsprint right now, but I expected a bit of pica behaviour from the morphine she got yesterday

I am okay with where she is at this point. :)

This morning I found Tonka in the hammock and on the upper shelf again :happydance:

A big yawn, but then an owwie stretch made me run for the metacam. I gave her .15 cc's this morning along with her nasty Metro.

I let them rest and the metacam to do its work. Then pulled out a very happy Monkey and Tonks onto the couch. Yay! :joy:
Incision 2 days later

Running around...although she is a bit awkward in her back end, and very flat footed

Happy in HER basket

I'm happy to see she looks soooo good this morning! Now that the abscess has been sutured, does that also mean that if Dr. Munn wanted to drain it again it would be much easier to manage and reach since it's not floating around internally?

:joy:

I think its to remain open but if it does close and fill up then she could do it again :) It smells nice and meaty, no smell of infection. I think the suturing to the abdominal wall is the tricky part of the surgery. Isn't she just amazing?!
