I have posted on Joanna's post of her babies as she lives in the same province as I do. I hope we can get a buddy for Wilbur if he continues to do well.

More Wilbur pics...he looks sooo bright! He reminds me so much of Hope.

Wow you can see so much improvement in that last one.
This little one deserves so much for being so strong.

Also I've never heard of a rat with this problem so i'm assuming its very rare?

My goodness, he looks SO much better! He's so beat up in that first one, but he looks so bright, despite his deformity, in the second. Way to go, little man! Keep up the good work!

Hi guys just an update on Wilbur. He is now 97grams (hew was 90 on Monday) I am happy he is gaining weight! If this is good or not I am not sure. How often should I be trimming his teeth...the vet said every 2 to 3 weeks but should I do it sooner then that or not? He can eat bread and cereal and seems to be able to bite pieces off as long as they are paw size. He has been drinking like mad today as well (we replaces his old water tube). Thanks everyone for all your warm words and welcome Wilbur, Elizabeth and I appreciate it.

PS we (hubby and I) were looking at cages today for buddies for Wilbur. Joanna we will prob be contacting you after the holidays :)

Here is Monocle's story...he's in better body condition overall but his wounds seem more serioius..btw Monocle is doing just fine, and on the 27th he's going back to the vet to get his teeth removed. Initially the vet refused to do it, but after months of every 3 days of trimming, the vet thinks it would be best.

I've been reading along with this, and I've been frothing over this for a while now - how dare that teacher not use Wilbur in the science fair, just because he's got a hare lip! They should have done a whole project on how hard that boy must have fought just to get this far. How on Earth did he get enough milk from his mother? It's bad enough having badly-treated animals in schools in the first place, then showing children you can just throw a living thing away if it doesn't look good enough - how horrible!

I'm so happy he seems to be doing well! How lucky he is, being found by such wonderful people!

I agree, he would have made a wonderful science project. They could have discussed causes, different degrees of cleft lip and palate, and how the surgeons repair cleft palates now. He was not getting the support he needed there at the school.
Perhaps the daughter could do her project on him?

Wilbur is at his grandparents home now for the holidays with us. He is liking his new foods so much he is not wanting the baby food. I have gone out and purchased rat pellets and hydrate them with water and he loves it. We still give him the chance to eat the baby food as well but he just seems to not bother with it as much. I think I have to cut his teeth tomorrow they are growing like bad weeds..lol...wish me luck. He is getting so busy when he comes out of his cage, all he wants to do is explore his surroundings (I am taking that as a good sign as well). Well that is my update for day 7 with Wilbur.

It is a very good sign. Boys usually like to explore and get into things. Little boys love to play, you can probably get him to be a finger wrestler, my boys go nuts if i even make the sound of it.

If he's out and about playing, that is a sure sign he is feeling better. I always go for the "underdog" animals, I find they have such a zest for life.
Congratulations on a beautiful little boy, he's such a love.
