Quick question.

If she is taking the Ensure really well, is it necessary for me to give her the rehydration fluid?

She has been on my chest all night, but for dinner I put her back in her cage by my husband. About ten minutes later I asked him how she was and lo and behold she has moved herself to the opposite side of the cage, all by herself!!

I can only hope to look so good if I ever get pregnant.

No kidding!

I sure hope Ninja gets better soon and you have more time with her. That pic of her sleeping on your chest is just too precious. It is so heartbreaking when they are sick.

Did you sleep Meghan? How is Ninja today?

I've been sleeping well lately and feel a lot better.

My husband woke up before me today and gave Ninja her meds. He tried to give her some Ensure but she wouldn't take it. After I woke up, I tried to give it to her and she took it. Guess its just mommies special touch

Shes back sleeping in her cage now. The oxygen is still being given to her. We figure it can't hurt.

I tried to clean her off a bit last night because I can tell its driving her crazy having a sticky, crunchy chin. Her eyes have been better since the day she got worse. Now she doesn't get nearly as much porphryin.

Updated on Ninja.

She is eating well. Still on the Ensure. We will offer her a Cheerio and she'll eat it, but she won't grab it with her paws.
The Ensure though, shes getting around ten syringes a day.

She is still unstable on her feet, very wobbly. She tries to clean herself after every meal though, so she can use her arms.

I'm still terrified that she isn't going to recover though. With her still being unstable on her feet, and her one eye seems a little bit smaller than the other one.

When I put her back in her cage, she can maneuver her way around to find a nice comfy spot where she wants to be.

If it's PT, she will never recover, she will get a little better for a short while on meds but... At least you have this time with her. :hugs:

You guys, if it is PT, is she in pain right now? I know she must be frustrated to not be able to walk anywhere, or grasp onto food.

What are the options? How long should we give the medication to see if her walking improves? This certainly isn't a life full of quality for my poor little baby girl.
Do ratties with PT go on their own? Do you ever have them pts?

Every day I wake up and hope that her eye has gotten better or that she is able to walk around better, but it is not. :cry3:

Shes eating really well though. Tons of Ensure everyday and today she ate a whole veggie thins cracker along with one Cheerio.

I would syringe feed her the rest of her life, I would do anything for my little girl, but I want her quality of life to be good for her and I don't want her in pain.

I don't consider PT painful. Its a quiet thing and usually a quiet passing. Most of mine go at home in my arms. If you had steroids at home, I would say give her those but its unlikely you do.

No improvements on motor skills at all?

This is where it gets tricky. Personally, I try meds for a few days, if I see improvements to the point of some quality of life like feeding themselves, grooming themselves, showing some interests, then I continue.
But if the rat is not improving and just basically existing... then I stop the meds and let them go. Most times they go at home with me. I've gone through so many PTs, I'm sure there is no pain. I've discussed this with my vet and she agrees with me. But... it's also a gift to send them off to their next life...
This is really hard for you Meghan, be strong for yourself and your Ninja. Do what is best for you and what feels right for her.

She can scoot her way around her cage to find a spot that is comfortable for her, although it is not proper walking.
She also has no problem cleaning herself. She can bring her front paws up to her ears and try to clean her face.

What would the steroids do for her?

Jo, so you stop the meds and let them go on their own? I really don't think I could do that. If it is anything like that first night than I know I can't do it.
