Toby has been on Zithro + Doxy, both twice daily for 8 days, then we took away doxy and added baytril ..so now for the oast 4 days he has been on zithro + baytril twice daily. He is still congested at times .. only when he gets excited, or just wakes up. could this be scar tissue from over a year of resp troubles?

I've got a couple of boys like that so I keep a nasal saline spray and I give it a little squirt near their nose and it clears them up fast.

It was by Triaminic (sp?) for children...but I can't seem to find it in stores anymore. So the next one I'll get will be any saline nasal spray suitable for small children.

Toby has two weeks of Zitrho (once daily) and baytril (twice daily).

He still makes those congested sounds, only when excited or after a nap, the saline spray helps though!

Is there anything else worth trying, or is this congestion just from lung damage? from the past year of resp issues?

He eats fine, gaining weight actually :giggle:
He has high activity level.
No porph around eyes, just occasionally around the nose.

Have you tried nebulizing him?

My vet thought about this, but where he has lung damage, he said it might make him worse (he is only going by recommendations on his fourm)

I nebulize with saline. I find it helps. I've got a boy that has horrible lung sounds. Been on baytril/doxy for a long time. I started nebulizing him twice a day and I find it helps. It would just be like spraying him with a saline mist I would think. Just a suggestion.

I could suggest it to my vet, but I would have to take him down there to do iot, as I dont have one here.
That may stress him out?

Hi, just read this thread for the first time. You are approaching this from one angle: respiratory problems.
A symptom of congestive heart failure is fluid in the lungs. Has Toby's heart been checked out?

Yes, he has been check out for Hear Conditions.

He has no blue extrmities, Heart sounds fine and xrays came back normal

We had an xray done a few months ago, but I have made an appointment for another one, but I was unable to get one until Dec 15. I really don't think that its CHF tho.

Copied from Rat Guide:

Tires more quickly.
Inactive or sleeping more than usual.
Weakness of the hind limbs not associated with arthritic conditions or neuropathies
Dry cough, bronchial wheeze , or moist lung sounds, making breathing labored. May prop up head to breathe easier.
Enlarged abdomen , and / or swelling in limb(s) and feet , and / or weight gain may be seen due to fluid retention. *Note: the enlarged abdomen and swelling in limbs and feet is not commonly seen in rats with this condition.
Little to no appetite.
Cool, pale extremities (e.g.,ears,feet,tail) due to poor circulation.
A noticeable sign with CHF is cyanosis (a blue tinge due to poor oxygenation) of scrotum, toes and tip of tail. This is often a late sign.
May show anxious behavior when breathing becomes harder (e.g., not willing to be held or stay in one place).
Scant dark (concentrated) urine.
Dilute Urine if kidney disease present

Only things in bold is what he has.
He has had these symptoms for over a year ..first started out as alot more congestion, trouble catching a breath, lots of porph, now he only has congested breathing when laying down or when excited.
Very little to no porph (only on the nose)

Can anyone suggest any other med to try?

He has already been on:

Baytril alone
Baytril + Doxy
Doxy alone
Zithro + Doxy
Zithro + Baytril

He dose not act like a sick rat, he just sounds congested. Should I stop worrying?

Azithromycin needs to be given at 5 - 15 mg/454.4 g twice a day for at least 3 weeks.
I give it plus baytril for at least 6 weeks in order for it to be effective.
If antibiotics are helping then he needs to be kept on it long enough - usually at least 6 weeks.
If it doesn't help then you try a different combo.

As for heart failure, if I try several combos of antibiotics and nothing works,
then I try benezapril or enalapril (0.25 mg/454.4 g twice a day) if this helps then there is a heart problem and atenolol (1 mg/454.4g twice a day) is added.
Not all heart problems cause the heart to become enlarged. Not all heart problems can be detected on an xray.

Rat guide says Zithro should be given twice daily for 2 weeks, then once daily for 2 weeks.

4 to 8mg/lb BID-SID, PO

.1 to .2cc/lb BID for the first 14 days, then .1 to .2cc/lb SID for another 14 days, if needed

I always give baytril twice daily.

The only symptom he has now is congestion at times
and the meds are not helping.

Meds used to help the congestion, now they dont ..which is making us think there is lung damage causing the congestion.

this all started a year or more ago ..started with porph and wheezing ...now only congestion.
