I was going down as an ER visit today with Toby & Sophie ..I called last night and informed them ..they said come around 2, but they just called and said they had someone reschedule so now I have a appointment for 3 :joy:

I'll update when I get home ..good vibes are needed ..we all know I NEVER have luck!

Home from the vet!

I got 3 boxes of Azithromycin (200mg/5ml) not mixed of course. The box says discard after 10 days??
I will be giving it to Toby twice daily for 14, then once a day for 14.

I mentioned giving Baytril or Doxy with it, but he said to just try it alone and if he don't do well on just it alone, we will add baytrirl :wallbang: ..So I have no baytri to go with it atm. He dose not want to mix doxy with it due to the two cases that stroke were observed :wallbang:

Dose anyone on here used doxy with Zithro?? I do have doxy here that I could add with it ..or shoudl I try it alone first??

I still do not know the proper dose to give him ..I am waiting for Lilspaz to reply to my PM

For anyone who is good ad dosing ..he weighs 600 grams.

Your vet didn't tell you how much to give him?

No because I thought it was going to be the same as the one I had previous (100mg/5ml) ..but this one is 200mg/5ml) ..I used to get a prescription from my vet and get it filled myself ..but my vet purchased these and brought them into the clinic.

I can call down and get him to give me the correct dose ..but I figured I could just ask on here.

Zithro is only good for 10 days after mixed (according to my vet and the 2 different pharmacies where I have gotten it from). Also since this isn't the first occurrence of of Toby having a serious URI I think you need to push a little harder to get more baytril because at this point you need a good strong combo if you have any hopes of kicking this infection. My worry would be that in the time it takes you vet to be satisfied that you need baytril as well that the zithro will already be slightly less effective

I have three boxes of Zithro which equals 10 days of reach box for a total of 30 days.

I cannot get baytril at this point ..but I do have Doxy ..I will be starting him on both Zithro and Doxy (Advised by Lilspaz)

The rat guide states Doxy + Zithro is good for older chronic rats ..Toby is 18 months old and have had chronic resp problems!

I had an older rat that eventually died from scarred lungs/pulmonary abscesses due to a chronic URI and I personally saw no improvements when baytril wasn't being given. If you have no other options then doxy/zithro is better than just zithro. Is there possibly another vet you could see to get baytril?

We have three vets here in newfoundland that see's rats ..my vet is the most experienced sadly and he knows Toby's history so I dont relly feel comfortable going to someone else ..I have an awesome relationship with my vet.

Toby has become immuned to baytril as well, so really I don't think that it will do much!

I am going to give the Zithro/Doxy a try and if there is no improvment I will then get baytil from him!

I do have baytril that eve is on, but she needs it and theres not enough xtra to give toby for 30 days!

Bacteriostatic, broad-spectrum antibiotic. Good for respiratory infections. Has been shown to have excellent results on younger rats, but is less effective on chronic, older rats. Use in combination with Doxycycline for better results in these cases. (Caution: there have been two reported cases of stroke using this combination, although they have not been definitively connected to use of either drug.) Does attack mycoplasma specifically. Cherry flavored — most rats love it. Expensive. Prescription needed
.

I have 2 options!

Give the Zithro/Doxy Combo

OR

Give Zithro/Baytril (lowest dose) Combo

I only have enough baytril at the lowest dose for 28 days!

Would I be better off using The Doxy at full dose, or the baytril at lowest dose??

Keeping in mind Toby was on baytril alone for 6 weeks with no success then he was on baytril/doxy combo for 3-4 months which worked but then stopped!

You could start with just Zithro for now and in a week if you don't see any improvements, you could add the doxy.

I already did Doxy tonight!

The Very First time we used it, was 3 months ago:
Zithro once a day for 10 days + clenbutrol (horse decongestent - not an antibiotic) twice a day for 30 days - this cleared him up for close to 3 months.

When we introduced Scamp (almost 2 weeks ago), thats when he started showing signs again, so we put him on Zithro once a day for 10 days + Clenbutrol ..but it never did anything ..which leads us to today.

If he were mine, I'd do Zithro twice a day for the first week and I would probably do doxy at the same time too.

:nods:

So only twice a week for the first week?

Rat guide says twice a week for 14 days then once daily for 14

Toby seems to be doing better already only after two days of meds :)

We mix his medicationg with PB/No Sugar Added Apple Sauce and Olive Oil (Thansk to Victoria for the great idea)..he is going to be one fat lil rattie :giggle:

8 days on the Zithro + Doxy now ..and there was a change at first ..but now he is all congested now ..I do have baytril now ..could I start that tonight with the Zithro instead of using the doxy??
