You won't regret it. Even if it ends up not helping with the honking, you'll see tons of other benefits (softer hair, more energy, etc)

Can you tell I'm completely sold to it??? :laugh4:

I usually get prescribed Metacam for the first week that I have a rat on abs (I always thought it was to make them comfortable but I think there may be more to it now) but when I took Annabelle in recently to discuss trying other things my vet told me to give her Metacam for 2 months. She actually started sounding worse until week two then most of the rasping noises she was making (I could feel the rasping in her lungs when I held her too) went away.

I tried nebulizing before with little success because the rats got too stressed but Monty was so bad last week I had nothing else to try. I can't even put him in the carrier to do it because he gets too stressed (before I even bring out the nebulizer) so I am just holding him for 10-20 min at a time and the improvement has been encouraging. I'm using Mucomyst (Acetylcysteine 200 mg/mL) and Aminophylline (50 mg/mL) with saline (1 mL and .06 mL/10 mL of saline respectively).

They both have pneumonia to different degrees of severity (Annabelle doesn't seem affected by her noisy breathing, Monty is much more severe) so I don't know if their treatment would apply to a URI but if you are thinking about anti-inflammatories and bronchodilators , there's my experience.

I also use Booster and while I find it helps some, definitely helps with coat/skin and I'm pretty sure it's the reason why Sophie didn't have a second stroke and fully recovered from the first, I haven't had the same results as Nancy. I special ordered a huge tub from Healthy Bird so if you would like I can put some in a jar and sent it to you if you pay the shipping. The dose is .2-.6 mL per kg pf body weight. I just mix it into soft food and feed a mid range dose to the entire cage.

Just ordered myself some Booster from work (the perks of working at a vets!) so i'm eager to give it a go after you lot have been raving about it!

So I got back from the vet.

OF COURSE, Yoshi and Trixie were NOT making any noises when we got to the office *rolls eyes*. But I got a combination of clavamox and baytril for Delilah.

He listened to both sides and then her throat with the mini stethoscope and found that the noise was louder in the throat then in the lungs indicating congestion in her throat. SO yay! Not in her lungs :D:D

AND even better news: Yoshi gets her surgery tomorrow!!!! I think I have decided to postpone her spay until possibly next month to give her some recovery since her tumor is soooo large now. We discussed it and it really seems a possibility that her body could go into shock. Dr. G. is really not comfortable doing both, so I don't think I will make him... tbh, I was worried about the spay anyway :-/

So all around good news! I was so worried, my stomach was jittery all day about it. I'm nervous for the surgeries tomorrow too, but not as bad as I was for the appointment.

It really is :)

And he took my suggestions AND... AND gave me over 4 weeks worth of antibiotics!

Actually, all around a great appointment... haha except when it came to pay the bill! haha!

Just thought that I would update this

Yoshi has recovered well from her surgery :D She still has a very congested nose, so I think that I will do the same thing as what I did with Delilah.
Delilah had the same thing as Yoshi. Yoshi was jsut more frustrating due to the fact she needed surgery ASAP. Delilah was given clavamox and baytril and I have not been sneezed on for quite some time!

SO for those of you that have tried many combos of drugs and nothing is helping a stubborn URI try clavamox!!
