I think a lot of it is dependent on where you are. When I had to take a rat in for an emergency euthanasia in a small town, the emergency fee was $125 plus the costs of an exam (I wanted to make sure there was nothing else that could be done) and euthanasia. A couple of months later and in a big city, the emergency fee was $35. The difference was in one case I paged the vet at home, and she had to come and open the clinic for me, in the other, it was an e-only vet and the staff were scheduled to work and it was part of their normal scope of operations. As for getting an e-vet that's knowledgeable with rats.... that's always a gamble. It's very rare to have a practice where all the vets are knowledgeable with exotics (unless it's an exotic clinic, and then many of those don't do after-hours emergencies) so it really is just the luck of the draw who is on duty.
