I'm so sorry. Whatever he had, it was just too much for him. I am glad that you had some nice time with him near the end.
I'm so sorry for your loss. 
You did what you could. It sounds very similar to Lulu's story. I lost her at a young age, too, and the conditions/symptoms sounded eerily similar.
As far as how to help the cagemate left behind, spend loads of time with him. You will both be down for awhile. It was the same with Yuna and me. We both just sat around each other, dozing on and off. Despite our grief, we really bonded then. It will get easier -- not right away, but time heals many wounds. Thinking of you.

When we lost our first boy Jacob(RIP), it left his brother Dominic(RIP) alone, as we had just started intros with Gregory and Quilt (RIP) and they were not at all ready to move in together. At the time I was home most of the day and just left Dominic with access to the couch with me anytime I was there. I went from being his "preferred human" to part of his "pack" in about 2 days. He started asking me to scritch him a lot where he no longer had Jacob to groom him and would sleep in the cage nearest to the couch when I was there. Made sure to give him lots of extra attention for a while until we were ready to resume intros. He seemed a little low key for a few days but did not seem to grieve for Jacob as hard as Gregory has grieved for Quilt and Dominic...although that may be because Dom was content with people and Greg prefers to be social only on his terms regardless of rat or human.
