Hi guys, my little Thumper seem to be getting worse. He sneezed for the first week or so but thats usually normal with a new home right? But i have had them for two and a half weeks and it seems his 'sneezing' has come back. Im wondering if i should be worried about a respiratory infection and if i should be thinking about a vet appointment.

here is is, http://youtu.be/3_6iJEGPSvw

He only does it after he wakes up and for 10-30 seconds is the usual. so im not sure how much i should be worried.

My big concern is my parents not wanting to take him to a vet to due 100$ bill to get them and everything they need and soon another 75$ bill for a new cage. Plus we have had many expenses in the last 4 months, like my dogs surgery and etc. I didnt know how common the infections where till i joined here, so i would never have known.

Mostly my question is, what does it sound like? Should i be worried? Should i contact my dad (hes away on business) to see if i can bring him to a vet?

Thanks

I emailed my dad the information on RI and showed him the video on Thumper and he is fine on taking him to the vet is need be (Thank goodness, specially since he is in Europe right now). I was mostly wondering what should i be looking for in deciding if i should take him or not (what symptoms), i have held him to my ears about three times and sometimes it seems i hear a wheezing/squeaky sound when he breaths, not the whole time though?

He has had Porphyrin around his eyes for a few days (looked like this, but only on one eye http://0.tqn.com/w/experts/Pet-Rats-353 ... around.jpg) , though i have not seen it today, he still eats, plays, is curious and cleans himself.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you again. I was able to make a vet appointment at the same clinic i take my dog (Oakridge Animal Clinic) with a exotic pet specialist (lucky me) on tuesday at 6pm.

I will update on tuesday how the appointment went.

I wanted to make a list of what i have seen so maybe some one can give me a cue to what it may be (though only at the vet appointment will i really know, but im curious)

1) Hiccuping/sneezing
2) porphyrin around eyes (dried or fresh)
3) Some days he seems tired and not playfull while others he is climbing and running around.
4) This is him yesterday http://youtu.be/3c2-T3RY-8w

He still cleans, drinks and eats well, some days e seems better then others, and i only heard a little click/squeak when i put him up to my ear once.

I was wondering what it may sound like to you.. allergies? RI? Myco? etc

Thanks

He defiently sounds different to the young boy I had who had a URI, it started with sneezing but quickly developed to wheezing hiccupping, clattering breath sounds, which he should have been treated aggressively with baytril, doxy and Neb therapy unfortunetly by then though it was way too late. Ya i'd see a vet asap and suggest those kinds of treatments though, especially if the doc can hear issues going on in his lungs. The sooner you treat it the less likely of it going into phenomonia :S

Great News!

After the doctor look at the videos, listened to his lungs and looked his eyes, ears ad nose he concluded that Thumper was perfectly healthy. He even told me on what to look for in sickness ad that he can give me university papers on rats if i ever wanted to learn more or wasn't sure about something. Im glad to find such a great vet and that my Thumper is perfectly healthy.

That's great! So maybe he was just making those sounds cause he was nervous, maybe it was his way of calling mama hehe

Your boy has what I call Icky Hics...or hiccups with a nasally sound which you are going to have to watch carefully. Hiccups are usually silent but because he's making noise he may have a URI waiting in the wings or nasal congestion.

He has gotten worst (thanks for answering me), i did ask you about the dosage, so like you know he was but on 'baytril' he is the same, kind of lazy, he sneezes quite often too and also when you get close to him his breathing sounds bad (not listing to his lungs, but just getting close to his face), its like a eekk sound when he breath in and out. The vet only gave me two weeks and you told me he was under dosed. So now i have money to take him to a different vet (clarke animal hospital) which i want to make an appointment tomorrow for next week. But now my dad is telling me to "thrust the vet, if he gave you two weeks of meds, it means he only needs two. And he isnt sick, the vet is just preventing him from getting sick. You dont need to take him" Im a little pissed, my dad never thrust me, but he dosnt know ONE thing about rats. First he didnt listen to me about my dog, and so he had to take 12 teeth pulled out, even though i brushed him every day. I told him if we had done the teeth cleaning at the vet a few months earlier maybe he would need to even get one pulled. I dont understand my parents some times, im 18 and i made my own money for this.

Sorry for the rant, hopefully some of you can give me advice.
