First, I'm not sure if this is the right session to post this, so feel free to move it to the right one if needed.
I'm going to travel in a few weeks, I'll stay away for one week, and I don't know what to do with Tommy. He's almost 26 months old and unfortunately he doesn't have a cagemate. He needs some "old boy" special treatments and I don't want to let him alone all this time. But I'm also worried about the stress a travel could cause him.
The cons of letting him home would be:
- He would have to stay an entire week in his cage. In his normal living space my dogs could easily catch him (they don't try to do it when they're not alone, so there's no worries when there's someone home, which won't be the case)
- He doesn't drink water and he's really picky with what he'll drink. I'm always paying attention to see if he had drink something and if I have to make other things for him to drink. There's a few days he only get any liquids from fruits, and since we're in the summer, I have to change the fruits at least three times each day cause it get rotten very quickly. The person who will take care of him and my dogs will only see him once each day, so they won't be able to spend much time changing his food and drinks.
- He would be completely alone for a week. I spend most of the night awake in my room (where Tommy lives), he always had a little company every night since his cagemates passed and I'm worried about leaving him, he had never been completely alone before.
The cons of taking him with me would be:
- The stress it could cause him. He would have to spend approximately 2 hours in the car (the same time we spend when going to the vet + coming back home) and one week away from home. I think I can adjust a space almost like the one we have here, but I don't know if just the fact that it's a different environment will stress him.
- We're going to the beach, so I don't know if/how the ATM (?) and the temperatures could affect him in any way.
I really want to take him with me, but I've never traveled with a pet before and I have no idea what will be better to do in his case. Does anyone have any suggestions?
P.S.: Rats are definitely not common pets in my country, so there's no one that could stay with him for a few days. I only know of a vet clinic but I don't had a good experience in there since the only doctor I trusted had moved to another city.
