Pray for my boy

I was not prepared for the news I received from the vet today.

My boy has been on meds for the last 2 months and seemed to be doing well, despite the loss of his buddy, Albert, in September.

2 weeks ago, I put Buddy on Lasix because his breathing still wasn't right. He improved significantly. He came off the Lasix last weekend and the heaving started again. Needless to say, I was convinced that he has a heart issue and expected that the vet would put him on meds for life... which she did.

What I did not expect is that she is only giving Buddy another 4-6 weeks to live.

She said that "if he makes it through December, I will be happy."

The x-rays tell a terrible story. There is some kind of growth in Buddy's chest area which is putting pressure on his heart. The thing is so large that you can't even see the entire heart.

We can't take a culture of it because the danger is too high that the heart could be punctured as well.

My vet says that she has seen something similar before with rats suffering from Myco. Since Buddy has been hiccuping like crazy for the last week (Debbie D. says these are actually sneezes and are only present in rats with Myco) it is clear to me that my boy is desperately ill and there is nothing we can do other than make him as comfortable as possible.

One small ray of hope is that this "thing" in his chest contains fluid and compacted mucous. If this is the case, the Lasix will hopefully kill off some of it, reduce the size of the thing and, hopefully, let me keep my baby for another several months.

He was tired when we got home so I bundled him up into his favorite box and fed him a ton of veggies, soy yogurt, meds and a grape for dessert. (none of mom's cheese was given with the grape since Doxy doesn't like Dairy and vice versa.)

Please keep my boy in your thoughts and prayers.

I will continue to do everything I can for my baby but suffering is not an option. If he takes a turn for the worse, despite the medications, I will do the kindest thing for him and help him to the Bridge... to his Albert.

This was not what I needed before the holidays. :tearful:

Rat lives are too short. Their only fault, really
Thinking of you and your little boy and hoping he does get better

Buddy is still hanging in there but he still has moments where he sounds like a little foghorn.

His breathing has not improved much and his heartbeat is wild.

Despite everything, he is still active and HUNGRY! The little garbage disposal inhales everything I give him (quantities have doubled and trippled in the last week).

Shelagh, I did ask my vet about steroids and was told that steroids are a bad move for a viral issue because they shut down the immune system.

According to information I received, steroids can reduce the size of a mass but they only provide a few, short, days of relief for the rat and will, in the long term, make the illness even worse.

Buddy does not seem to be suffering at all. He sleeps alot and is happiest in my lap taking a snooze under my sweatshirt sleeve.

He continues to pee all over my office supplies and has discovered a taste for my magnifying glass handle. :giggle:

im so sorry jen. i hope the meds can work for him to give him a bit more time .. in the interum, enjoy the precious time you have with him. poor guy.. and poor you. :hugs:

sending healthy vibes your way.

He pilfered a chocolate chip that managed to land on the floor and then stood on my foot waiting for more food... which he got.

Kosher hot dogs with a little ketchup is a HUGE hit. He actually scaled my pant leg to get more... while I was STANDING! (shh... I'm not going to remind him of his heart condition when he's busy being Hercules.)

His breathing is still a little labored, but he seems to do better after receiving his meds.

He will be getting his fair share of Thanksgiving Day yummies.... to include chicken parmesan, pappardelle noodles, steamed veggies and either apple or sweet potato pie (I thought I would be unique and do something other than turkey... they want a break too!).

Buddy can forget it if he thinks he will see any Pinot Grigio! I don't need a rat with a hangover. :laugh4: :bunnydance:

I had another instance where a picture was URGENTLY necessary and I had absolutely NO WAY to take it!

Buddy fell asleep in my hand. That's quite a feat for a relatively well sized little rat man! He curled his upper half into my right hand with his little head resting against my fingers and his paws curled up in front of him.

I was sitting on the bed with this little bundle of fuzz for almost 20 minutes!

I had SO MUCH to do!!!! ... but God had other plans so I left my little nose alone. He has a right to crash in my hand! It belongs to him since he pees on it on a regular basis. :giggle:

I am so glad that you are getting such good times with your sweet man. Let's hope that his good luck continues for a while. He is actually doing very well if he can still scale your pant leg.

It is hard knowing that his life will be short.

It takes a lot out of him though sweetie. I usually grab him and provide elevator service to my sweatshirt so that he doesn't have the strain.

He will lie on my lap and heave otherwise. :sad3:

Still, he seems like a happy little bundle. As Dr. Richards puts it.... he still possesses that "something" which makes him "him".

Buddy knows that I will never sit back and let him suffer. :love6:

I've discussed things with my boys upstairs. They know to keep Buddy's cloud warm and watch for him when the time comes. I expect them to greet him at the polychrome gates.

Jen, you are so good to him.

They are so easy to be kind to Jo.

There is nothing in the world more deserving of loving treatment than a little fur face. There is no malice, whatsoever, in their little bodies. :rose:

Buddy licks my nose on a regular basis and the undying trust he has in me shows when he comes running to say "hi". :love4:

He will show me the business card he has shredded with pride and will cuddle under my chin after peeing on my sweatshirt.

Any self respecting rat lover knows that marking one's owner is the greatest honor. Buddy claims me personally as his own property... and that helps cheer me up on bad days. :love6:

Nothing comes between me and my boy. He gets what he wants and needs, case closed.

I get marked and he gets belly blows and kisses... what more do you need in life? :bunnydance:
