There are other signs when the time is near. Prominent nipples, building a nest...
I'm sure some of the more experienced people could add to this. I have only had rattie babies once, and it was just luck that I moved mom into her own cage the same night she had babies. (We weren't SURE she was pregnant as well...)

Here are some of the "baby bellies" of moms that have come through the rescue. These were all taken a day or two before the babies were born:

She was struggling, but you get the idea of the size of her belly.

You can really see the "baby handles" here:

So that's the kind of baby belly you should be seeing right now.

Well, Dottie's due date was Nov 16 and she didn't have any babies. I've kept her in her maternity house just in case she was just late. Today her belly feels a bit bigger and I can see her nipples more easily. She isn't building any nests, but I was examining her and her vulva looks more red and a bit swollen.

Can I chalk this up to a sign of estrus or may it also be a sign of impending labour?

Could be still pregnant. The gestation can be longer in some rats.

You're telling me! My only litter was with Cutie, she went 3 days over her due date and I thought I might have been safe. No belly. I woke up to 12 little lilac dumbo babies the next morning lol

I went 1.5wks over with my first... must be something in the water here :giggle:
