Palm fronds?

So I live in South Carolina and there are tons of palm trees. Not the ones that produce coconuts, just regular palms...everyone I see the dried leaves on the ground I want to pick them up, freeze/sanitize them, and make toys for my ratties....can I do that though? Is it safe? Would it make them sick? Please help!
