That re minds me of my Stewart, in his early stages. Get those meds into him, and pray hun!

Just asking but would a dose of benedryl (children's) be good to give? I know when Stewart was at his worst, we gave him Lasix/Benedryl to help remove the fluids from his lungs, a CHF medication and to open him up. It seemed to help him but he was just too far gone to recover 100%.

I think we figure it out! A little search on the shack brings up great posts. But could someone post the dosages so we can write them down, double check too?

I know it should be given at the higher end ..but I still don't want to give it until I know the correct amount! ..anyone??

He weighs 580 ..and the IBP is 200/5ml

According to the rat health care book the dose for benadryl is 5 mg/Ib twice a day = 5 mg/454.4 g twice a day
so at 580 g, he would need 6.38 mg twice a day.
How many mls this would be depends upon the strength of the med.

what is IBP?

Whenever I get Metacam for pneumonia, I usually get the lower end dose, so I think Ibuprofen would be the same. At 10 mg/kg, Oscar's dose is .15 cc's (5.8 mg)... I think. I'm tired, so it would be good if someone double checked that.

Edit: SQ beat me to it. IBP is Ibuprofen and the concentration is 40 mg/mL.

Is this correct?

Highest:0.44

Lowest: 0.14

200mg/5ml solution

Rat guide says:
10 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg , PO , q4hrs
or
15 mg/lb to 60 mg/lb , PO , q4hrs (low dose for analgesia, high dose for anti-inflammatory effect)

ibuprofen causes fluid retention so if he has fluid building up in his lungs, this would probably not be a good med.
also causes decreased blood flow to kidneys, it is more risky to use in the elderly, with heart or kidney disease or with diuretics such as lasix.
According to the rat care health book, the dose is 15 - 60 mg/Ib (15 - 60 mg/454.4 g) 2 - 4 times a day. Lower doses for analgesia, higher for inflammation.

At 40mg/454.4g he would need 51 mg of ibuprofen .... this would be approx. 1.27 ml at the strength of 40 mg/ml

Edit: I guess I'm too tired and in too much pain because the values in the rat guide don't make sense to me.
A kg is approx 2xs as much as a Ib so the amount for a kg should be twice as much as the amount for a Ib.
1 Ib = 454.4 g

Sorry but I'm not thinking clearly ... need more pain meds ...
all the best

rat guide says: 10 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg..which works out to 0.14 to 0.44..I never gave the benadrly yet

At his weight 0.42 ml should be 30mg/kg

If he is getting ibuprofen, make sure he does not get any pred.

Pred is an anti inflamatory but it decreases the immune system so it would decrease the effect of the antibiotics.

Oscar seems to be doing better this AM. Gave him 0.3 IBP last night, and again 7 hours later this morning. He has now had two doses of Baytril & Doxy. I have been giving him sugar water and lab block dust mixed in jar baby carrots.
I really hope my boy will be okay :sad3:

Glad he is feeling a bit better

No calcium 2 hrs before meds and 2 hrs after meds

If he starts to get dehydrated, pedilite from the drug store or a rehydration formula posted on he forum by Lilspaz68

He has been taking water mixed with sugar about 10 syringes every hour!

Just had some scrambled eggs.

Should i continue to give IBP every 6 hours?

Just picked up pedilite - grape flavor! Oscar is sleeping right now, I'll be giving him some when he wakes up before the rattie Easter party :)

Thank you for helping :hugs:
