OK now that I can see the videos...

Oscar is a Must...Toby is harder to tell...not quite yet.

Toby can still hang on?..he has been like this now for 3 or more months ..I just want to make sure I'm not keeping him here if he has no quality .. he still gets around, slowly ..tires easily ..still enjoys treats and food ..but is loosing weight ..was 620 in Feb, now 530.

I will keep him here with me, if it's not time yet.

Do another video...offer him food in it...I want to see how much he brightens up or not.
Oscar is done...he's just waiting now. I am so sorry about your lovely boy. I hate that rapid breahing...I always think pulmonary abscesses when I see that breathing.

The squeaking sounds are coming from him :(

Oscar has not had much food all day, some blueberries and banana and banana baby cereal ..he refuses any liquid ..sugarwater, ensure, pear juice or pedilite ..he gets random bouts of energy like in this video:

[youtube:16nvxymf]5XtP6ndP3eo[/youtube:16nvxymf]

After this video he ate about 3 spoons of baby cereal

Random times tonight he has jumped off the couch ..ran around ..and then ran back and jumped 14 inches up to the couch ..this is not like him ..then after he will pancake out and breath very very heavy :(

his back legs are also wobbly :(

I was able to watch the videos just now... If Toby was my rat, I would not be bringing him in... he still looks quite content, eats hard blocks still.

yes, he is still eating Jo,it just takes him a little longer to eat them.

Oscar has given up eating everything hard ..and eats very little soft ..he was eating mushed blocks up to yesterday(very little yesterday) ..won't look at them today.

When I bring him in tomorrow my vet will go over him first to make sure there is nothing more we can do ..but he is having panick attacks, not eating, lost 200 grams since December ..lethargic ..peeing on himself, grooming very little and extreme heavy breathing as you can see..I don't know if thereis anything we can do ..I wish I knew where I went wrong :(

I agree totally Jo. He's alert, bright, very interested in his food and attention. Oscar on the other hand is just waiting to go...

Does Toby hang out with Oscar all the time? If so his inactivity might be because he's staying near Oscar who is very inactive.

Oscar is just failing, nothing you did, his genetics did it to him. Its sad, but you both tried and in another home he would've been long dead.

I am so happy you guys think Toby is still a happy man ..I always want what's best for my guys ..Toby
s sounds make me think he is much worse than he really is..

Oscar and Toby are not around each other all the time ..living with 8 rats, they just switch buddies all the time ..Toby is much more active in his cage, than outside it ...

Oscar,Toby and Teddy have been here right from the get go! I was new to rats when they were born ..I'm glad they got to spend their whole lives here with me ..they have taught me so much

:(

I'm so sorry sweetie. It's never easy to see an animal get old, but if he's refusing food and water, I would say like everyone else, he's just waiting to go. But the other, Toby, I'm sure he has a bit more left in him and you might as well keep him around as long as you can. =3 GL dear, I know it'll be hard but at least he had a full happy life with you as his mama.

Oscar had a much more baby cereal this morning and is grooming a lot more ..he is dehydrated and his breathing is still rapid ...think there is any chance? ..get him some sub q fluids ..

I will ask Dr.D.when we go down as well.

:sad3: I guess it's time then .. were heading down shortly ..his apt is in a half an hour

I'm so sorry Renee... I agree that Oscar was very lucky to have you as a mom. You are doing the right thing by helping him go. I had 2 rats dying in my arms at night because of respiratory issue - believe me, you did not want to chance that. :hugs:

Hopefully, Toby will get better now. I'm glad you posted that video about him eating - Shelagh was right, he really did brighten up and I changed my opinion. I am learning too, after all! I hope the Booster will help get him in a more comfortable place so he can enjoy you and his friends to the fullest!

Hang in there - you definitely are a great ratty momma
