Industrious rats have been known to get under the pan and get through the large bar spacing. Or one of your new babies might be a pan chewer and decimate it over night.

Better be safe than sorry!

That is why I said mesh the entire cage ... industrious chewers can get through the coloroplast on the sides and back if they want to. Plus cats are very smart too.

If the FN isn't any good for you, perhaps you can sell it and put the money towards a CN?
A CN might be safer with the cats.

I have never had to mesh a cage but imagine it isn't much fun doing it or cleaning it.

Meshing a cage is no fun...especially with chicken wire! I'm going to use the franken cage and then the FN after...I have no money for a CN right nowso I'll deal with what I have.
