I just happened upon this topic...

When you neuter a rat, does your vet do a scrotal neuter (right by testicles) or abdominal neuter (similar to spay)?
Abdominal

How many rats have had you neutered over the years?
2

How many times did you have complications? What kind of complications?
1. An abcess developed because of pulling stiches too soon (<14days) on my one boy.

Did you do a course of antibiotics right after surgery?
No

What was/were the reasons for neutering?
Signs of aggression

I have a older male rat and he has not been neutered but I haven't had any behavioural issues.

He is affectionate and I do not regret not neutering him at all.

Currently, I don't neuter the males that are sweet, only those who need help coping with their hormones.
But... if I could afford it, I'd have all my males neutered. Same as cats and dogs.

2. Teddy developed several abcesess due to internal sutures and Bruno sadly took a heart attack and passed away :( (R.I.P bsby boy)

Did you do a course of antibiotics right after surgery?
Yes, metacam for one day.

What was/were the reasons for neutering?
Wanting them to live with the girls.

You guys are going to notice that I have an interesting sense of humor. I couldn't read each post without laughing.

Read slowly "How many rats have had you neutered over the years?"

Your answers "Ohh 5 times"

Scrotal, but technique has changed recently...used to be a single incision running between the testes, now is a small end incision.

Had many neuter abscesses at first, then vet changed suture material (4/8). Continued to have them occasionally (4/16) ), then vet changed incision site to very end and have had none at all since then (0/9)
Goliath developed paraphimosis after his neuter, and had 2 rats over-anesthetized at a bad vet's hands. Those 2 also had a lot of swelling and 2 incisions.

Have given a 7-day course of baytril with the first group of boys, but it didn't prevent neuter abscesses, so I don't any longer. Metacam for one day just in case. Most times they don't need a second dose, and some don't need any :)
What was/were the reasons for neutering?
Living with females, and mostly hormonal aggression.

Scrotal - 2 done in Ottawa, one in Toronto with Dr. Munn - in all cases they were tip incisions, I believe

Oddly enough, I've never had any complications with surgeries, for males or females - no picking at stitches or anything
Did you do a course of antibiotics right after surgery?
Not antibiotics, but Metacam for a day or two
What was/were the reasons for neutering?
My first two boys (Fitz and Tiddley) were done because I thought it was just 'done' to neuter/spay all pet rats (same as with cats or dogs). Mr. H. was done because of hormonal aggression - he was an irritable wannabe alpha, but the second he was neutered he settled so happily into an omega role, so I think it was the hormones making him alpha-ish. Mr. H. would have been neutered after Chance passed if he hadn't been before, because we knew we were getting girls this time around, and the Pips do not need Piplets.

Chance is the only male I've had who was not neutered - but he honestly thought he was a girl, so there were *no* hormonal issues, lol
