Naomi is a Liverpool baby and she was two years old in April.
Last night I realised that Naomi has a huge lump on her throat and under her chin. She was unable to eat, couldn't even lick baby cereal off my finger, and I'm not sure if she was able to swallow. Naomi would move around the cage trying to find a place and position where it was easier to breathe but she was unsteady on her feet. Naomi would lie, unmoving with her eyes open and staring - no visiable sign that she was breathing. Naomi also showed signs that she may have a neurological problem. I don't think she was getting enough oxygen ... and Naomi has diarrhea. Her body temp appeared low as she felt cool. No dehydration and she is still a bit plump so no great weight loss.

I took Naomi in first thing this morning to be put to sleep.
The vet withdrew (by needle) a huge amount of pus from the lump. Naomi is now on clavamox, baytril and metacam.
The vet said she may be septic from the infection and it is possible that she may go into septic shock.
Naomi's breathing is now more visible, she still seems to have a low body temp., she is slightly more active, less limp and steady on her feet.
Naomi is unable to eat and does not seem to be able to get water out of either the water bottle or the water dish, although she tries for long periods of time.
I am syringe feeding her liquidly baby cereal every 4 hours or so.
The lump is growing so I guess I will need to draw it out with a warm cloth since the vet did not open it.
Trying yogurt with active cultures for the diarrhea but not sure if that will make it better or worse. I will try probiotics and then pepto-bismol or kaopectate if it doesn't work .... guess I’d better head out to the store.

The hope is that the lump is just an abscess and that the lump that remained after aspiration of pus is just inflammation.
Naomi's family has a history of aggressive tumours, both Sandy (likely her mother) and her sister Betsie were pts earlier this year because of incredibly fast growing aggressive facial and neck tumours.
I am afraid that the lump is an aggressive tumour and that is has an abscess associated with it.
I didn't get anything else done with Naomi's lump at the vet's today as they were booked solid with no openings ... but they managed to squeeze me in as it was an emergency.

Suggestions for the weekend?

Suggestions for next week, if Naomi is still alive?

Awww poor both of you. :( The steroid may shrink the tumour's tissues if it ends up being a mass.

Was a lot of pus aspirated? Did there seem to be a hard swelling beneath it?

((hugs))

The entire lump, including pus seemed hard.
The remaining lump also felt hard.

I wasn't present when the pus was aspirated as Naomi was given gas in the operating room for the procedure.
I was shown what I was told was a small amount of the pus withdrawn ... it was looked to be about 2 ccs of yellow pus in a syringe.
So yes, a huge amount of pus.
The pus was found to be full of bacteria, actually it was almost completely composed of bacteria.

it could be just an abscess...and you're right the inflammation can take a bit of time to go down completely.

She had the diarhhea before you got the antibiotics right so it's a symptom of what's wrong with her rather than a reaction to the meds, but the yogurt can't hurt and will surely still soothe her tummy, maybe even help her existing problem and give her strength to get thru this.
Honestly, at her age with her acting & feeling that bad I'd have let her go gently at the vets rather than bring her home and put us both thru her suffering & me wondering what to do this weekend - but I've seen kids have much more good time left with others here than I would have given them. So I'm sure not questioning your decision, I'm with you 100%, you're the mom and the only one with instincts for Naomi.
So far as the weekend, I understand it takes 2 days at least for antibiotics to have any real effect? that puts you at sunday til you know if she's benefitting, so you'll have to carry on thru the weekend if she doesn't get worse. The next couple days are your best advice for the week ahead, eh?
I'll be praying for both of you.

Naomi has been doing much better this evening ... more active, more interested in things, eagerly taking food when being syringe fed. So I'm hoping for the best and enjoying patting and cuddlng her.
The yogurt seems to have helped but time will tell.
Naomi's breathing seems to be normal.
In terms of having Naomi pts, my vet felt that the best course of action at this point in time is to try the antibiotics since Naomi does have a huge abscess and that may be all that is wrong with her. Although he is off for the weekend, my vet said he would phone tomorrow to see how Naomi is doing.

Thanks for the comments and for the information.

Naomi's lump has been growing today, her head smells like pus (but the lump hasn't opened yet), and Naomi is feeling much worse.
I spoke briefly to her vet today and although he is off, it looks like he will be coming into the vet clinic tomorrow to see Naomi.

No evidence was found for a tumour but it seems that Naomi has 3 large throat abscesses.
The skin on the one under her chin is necrotic and was partially opened up and the thick pus removed today.
The vet could see her jaw bone and jugular in the hole in her throat.

The other two abcesses are full of thick pus but too close to Naomi's jugular and carotid artery to open.
The pus in them was too thick to aspirate.

So hoping & praying the meds clear up the infection and little Naomi is soon feeling better ...

Naomi has actually gained weight through frequent syringe feedings since Friday.

Edit: thanks to godmother for taking the photo for me while I held Naomi.

Oh man... I'm praying real hard that meds do the trick. She's got some infection going on. could also be teeth infection. Have though of doing Chlorpalm?

I asked the vet about chlorpalm, jorats, both on Friday and again today, but was told it would be best to keep her on clavamox.
The vet thinks the infection did not penetrate the jaw bone and does not think the teeth and roots are involved.
My vet isn't working today but made a special trip in to check on Naomi.

Naomi has been resting since we returned from the vet's. She did take a bit of food from the syringe a short while ago.
I gave her sub-Q fluids last night and again this afternoon. Also have been giving pedialite orally. (It is hot here.)

Hoping & praying for the best.

Poor kid! (and her poor mommy too).
She's sure got the cards stacked against her if you can't open those absesses, but if she's put on some weight it shows the determination both of you have to put your all into it and give her this chance. I so hope she's one of our miracles here and lives to feel real good again for a long time.
In the meantime you'll have to tell her that human strangers are in awe of her (hopefully she's receiving the hopes & prayers we send by that extra sense critters have and can feel them on her own) You don't have that sense, so I let you know I send hugs to you. You're giving her every chance possible, I'm hoping so hard that turns out to be celebration rather than just comfort for you.

Had a vet apointment today.
The vet thinks Naomi's lumps are a bit smaller. He is concerned about how the huge hole in her neck will heal - and it is going to get larger yet as the necrotic skin is shed.
Naomi is feeling better today, and although she still needs to be syringe fed, she is very interested in food.
She doesn't appear to be in pain and hopefully she will make it.
Naomi has another vet apt on Wednesday (as do Laurel and Buddy who need chest xrays)

I couldn't handle your heartload.
We've all seen the most massive injuries heal here with antibiotics and flushing/cleaning when necessary, wounds that look like a tenth of the kids body even. Honestly, I'd worry more about the closed abscesses, that's what her body's gonna have to fight.
She is a little trooper Hero in our midst right now. It would really be nice to have a picture of her sweet face (not her owies) to concentrate on when we close our eyes and send her love & strength & hopes.

Here are a couple of pictures of my chubby little girl from about two weeks ago.
