I couldn't honestly say what weight she is, she's quite slim as she's lost a bit of weight and just your average size in length, the calpol is 120mg of paracetemol per 5ml. She's been asleep for the last hour which has to be a good thing, poor girl is probably shattered through the lack of sleep just like me lol

The vets didn't mention how much she weighed at all while you've been there with her? You really need to be able to get an idea for her to be dosed properly. Do you have a kitchen or postal scale you can use?

OK we'll take a stab at weight then and say she's 350 grams
The Calpol is a lower concentration than we have here and is 34 mg/ml
ratguide.com recommends 100-300 mg/kg

at the low-end dosage of 100 mg/kg her dose would be 1.46 cc (or 1 1/2 syringes of a 1 cc/ml syringe)

You would need to mix it into something yummy like baby cereal.

Well calpol already has a strawberry taste so i might try it alone first, although i'm going to need to mix her antibiotics with something because i put some on a biscuit earlier and she flipped it wiping it across her bedding before eating it lol so i'll try it with mashed banana later, if not then i'll pick up some baby cereal :)

Good luck!!!

When she starts waking up and acting pained or restless then you can try the Calpol. If you know when the surgery actually happened, make sure its at least 12 hours post surgery before you give her any. Sleep is probably what she needs most.

It would have been between 11am and 12:30pm yesterday, its 2:25 pm here now so its been just over 24 hours, it will prob be tonight when she's starts gnawing at it again so i'll try her with a little then, thanks for the help :) i'm glad i found this forum otherwise i would be clueless and feel helpless

I tried her with some earlier but she walked away after one lick lol so i put the rest on a bit of cheesy biscuit and she munched most of it :) she's been sleeping most the day, but the rare occasion she has woke up she's been a lot friendlier coming to me for a fuss and even sniffing around wondering where her wheel is and her ladder with the higher platform which i had to take out because of her stretching her stitches, i've thrown a couple of cardboard tubes in there in case she feels the urge to chew something. Hopefully *fingers crossed she is on the mend, she's had a good wash but hardly licked and gnawed her wound :)

Sooo glad to hear she is doing better!!

And now that the scare is over I shall link you to the story of my Inca, who DID open up her incision...

oh dear i think i may need to visit the vet again tomorrow :( she's pulled out one of her staples, i've given her a little more calpol (last dose was 8 hours ago) now i'm too scared to go to bed again, she can still reach it even with the collar on (which doesn't stay on long anyway) and i know if i wrap her in anything she will just chew it off, i'm hoping she don't pull out anymore staples but i got a feeling i'm gonna wake up to the same as i did this morning a big gaping wound with flesh and muscle showing, the vet told me today to take her back if she pulls them out again but there's not much else they can do apart from putting her back together again :(

:( Sorry to hear that.

You could give Calpol every 4 hours if you give her a slightly smaller amount. We usually just give about 1/4 of the spoon in the box, or half at the very most. Might be worth giving her more if she has ripped the stitches again.

I take it you have the e-collar at home? I had to re-do mine so that it faced more forward than outwards...see if you can play with it that way. I finally figured it out so that Inca couldnt reach hers...take it off and keep trying to put it on differently.

I have tried but she won't let me near her with it now, she really must hate it lol, thankfully she hasn't pulled out anymore staples since i went to bed and the wound is still sealed where she pulled the staple out last night, its just a case of keeping a close eye on her now and giving her a dose of calpol when she appears irritated, there's little spots of blood on her bedding but not a lot, i'll change it when she wakes up again :)

Glad to hear your girl has come down off her funky high and is feeling more normal. I hope she leaves things alone long enough that the incision stays closed. Keep her on pain meds as the more comfortable she is, the less likely she is to mess with her incision.

thanks guys, she's just woke up for the first time in 5 hours so i've cleaned her cage, she's starting licking and messing with the wound again where she pulled out the staple so i've given her a bit of calpol (first dose since last night) i hope she leaves it alone long enough to heal, she's taking her antibiotics with a bit of cereal so hopefully that will prevent any infection :)

Well she had to have another couple of staples put in again this morning because where she pulled them out it wasn't sealing due to her constantly licking at it, she's still trying to pull them out again :( i can't watch her 24/7 and i can't keep going back and forth to the vets on a daily basis as its a fair distance which is eating up petrol and money is tight at the moment after spending a small fortune on vets bills and kids uniform. Its starting to really stress me out i just wish she would leave them alone, i attempted to wrap her up but she tried to bite me, just don't know what else to do :wallbang:

Yes i've still got her on the pain meds, it's mainly through the night she does it, i've had too many late nights lately trying to keep a close eye on her :(

How long has it been since the surgery? Can you take a pic so we can see what healing has happened?

If you saw Inca's trhead you saw how she opened it up again, but I kept it open adn it healed well. Depending on if its healed inside enough, you may be able to not worry about it. Sometimes we recommend leaving open an incision and letting it heal.
